The Summit

The South summit of the Chief is probably one of the most popular hikes in British Columbia. And why not? It is short (albeit steep) and offers breathtaking views (if you are willing to overlooking the industrial and pell-mell growth called Squamish).

The south summit, shown above is the smallest and most interesting of the three or so summits of the Chief, which are divided by steep and scary gullies (pictured here). I have seen some children, whose head were by all accounts filled with dough, throwing boulders

into the gullies. Be advised that people do hike up these things. If you ever find people (or, god forbid, yourself) tempted to do this, beat them senseless before they accidentally kill someone else.

There is some entertaining climbing on the South Summit, the prow of which is called Raven's Castle. A farty collection of sport-o routes add up to a day of low risk climbing in a fantastical environment of flawless granite with a summit head-space. This area holds the distinction of being the only place where I have successfully climbed a 5.8 with no hands.
