Langara College Journalism

Journalism is also a commercial business. It is like being the Vatican and having to turn a profit, being virtuous and shrewd at the same time.

The Department of Journalism at Langara College in Vancouver is the oldest school of journalism in western Canada and a recognized source of talented journalists working in British Columbia, across the country and around the world. The department offers a two-year diploma program for undergraduates and a one-year certificate program for graduate students.

Although primarily print-based, both programs include radio and television training. Langara’s journalism curriculum combines skills development, technological competency and grounding in the legal, ethical and social responsibilities of journalism.

Ross Howard joined the faculty in 2002 with 30 years of experience as a reporter and editor including National Correspondent and Parliamentary Reporter for The Globe and Mail newspaper, National Reporter for The Toronto Star and Assignment Editor with CTV-News in Vancouver. His career included reporting from Alaska to Argentina to Zimbabwe; covering 16 election campaigns; variously chronicling acid rain, lobbying, energy and land claims; and investigative reporting.

Our job is to enable well-informed citizen decision-making.

His journalism awards include a National Newspaper Award, a Canadian Association of Journalists award, a National Magazine Award, a Governor-General’s Award for Conservation, and two Webster awards.

He is a contributor to the Journalism Ethics for the Global Citizen website, a freelance magazine writer and a public speaker and commentator on the media. He recently served on the selection panel for the Webster-CIDA Foreign Assignment Scholarship, and is a judge for the Tyee online magazine Investigative and Solutions Reporting Fellowships.
