Previously (as a gesture to the European convention) I consciously replicated the look of a painting in a tapestry, but here for the first time I replicated the look of a tapestry in a digital form. I had increasingly been noting how advertisements appropriate the language of textiles to underscore layers of meaning in their messages. I pondered the question of why such a sub-text might work in the promotional art of pursuasion, yet could so easily be read as self denigrating, or at best, satire, or even nostalgia, with all its pitfalls in an expressive fine art context. A dictionary definition of "Intermediaries" describes it simply as a mediator. (Between positive and negative) I have selected the term because I choose to work with different technologies in dialogues with each other, that often fail to communicate, and often contradict themselves, and thereby beg for mediation. |
