Having been trained as a stenographer ("Tikster"), I needed to brush up on my Pitman's shorthand in order to use this secret language for a diary on my travels. I found old manuals and, through these, I was reminded of the many layers of subtle gendered codes in a typical office economy that I had experienced, but had not at the time recognised.
