My signature font, digitalizing an alphabet that I wove in Medieval-style tapestry, is a venture into confronting the codes associated with textile processes. While hating the pitfalls of hierarchical art classifications, I nevertheless love the spaces between this and that, and here and there. The signature font is therefore another manifestation of ambivalence. I can also see now that it is further instance of my, albeit timid, resistance to rules which started at a girls boarding school, and persisted through the apartheid years in South Africa. |
