A message from our president;
On behalf of the Glen Meadows Curling Association, I extend a warm welcome to all of our existing and new members to the 2009/2010 curling season. I am confident that this season will be one of our best ever!
Many of your curling colleagues have been busy over the summer. Several of our members spent a hot weekend at Glen Meadows attending the "Business of Curling" workshop and then, following the workshop, worked dilligently to update our club's Strategic Plan. This plan is key to our club's success as it clearly identifies our goals and our marketing action plans that will help us make our Curling Club an even more vibrant and enjoyable place to gather.
In addition to our efforts to strengthen the ranks within our current leagues, we are planning some new curling opportunities for both you and any new folks you would like to introduce to our great sport.
Over the past three years, we have built-up a core team of coaches who have achieved their National Coaching Certifications in accordance with CURL BC standards. This group of dedicated individuals are ready, willing and able to teach new curlers the fundamentals of the sport. More importantly, however, is that our coaches have the knowledge and the skills to help our intermediate and advanced curlers to take their game to the next level.
Our coaches will be very busy at the beginning of this season as they will take a prominent role at both our Icebreaker events (September 28-30, 2009) and at the public clinic on October 3rd, 2009.
Besides these season kick-off events, we have even bigger plans this year ...
To begin, we are very pleased to announce our Curling Association's new website. Our website enables all members of our Association, and of the general public, to keep abreast of the lastest curling news, events and activities at our facility. Teams can now access their draw sheets, rosters and spare lists on-line and, more importantly, contact information for the Association Executive and League Directors has also been posted. To find our new site, go to www.glenmeadows.bc.ca/curling and select the link to Glen Meadows Curling Association.
Secondly, we have created a new Seniors Competitive League on Monday afternoons. This is for curlers aged 50 or older and the participating teams can be all men, all women or mixed. Now this is going to be interesting ... I can foresee that pride will be at stake in this league, and along with all this pride will be a few bruised ego's ! Currently there are 10 teams interested and we can only take 12 so, if your interested in participating in this new competitive curling league, let Lawrence Woytowich know immediately if you want in (t-bird57@shaw.ca).
Thirdly, we have created a new Youth League on Friday afternoons. We have been in contact with three High Schools in our area and, given the importance of sport in the development of healthy young bodies and minds, there has been keen interest in this league by school athletic program coordinators. If you have teenagers or if you are interested in assisting getting this league off the ground, please contact Alan Collier (silcol@telus.net). I should note that we could really use some women helpers for this new league, so if you are looking for a chance to make a difference in your sport, we would appreciate hearing from you!
Forthly, we have created a new Junior Rocks Program that will be scheduled for Sunday mornings. The focus of this program will be will be on basic skill development including the no-lift delivery, sweeping and basic curling strategies. The program will be coached by experienced curlers and should be a fun event for all involved. If interested, please contact Mike Houle (mikehoule@shaw.ca)
And finally, we are revitalizing our Sunday afternoon Novice League. This is for new curlers and for those who wish to get back into this great sport. The program will run over a ten-week period and will include one half-hour of instruction each week, followed by a 4 to 6-end match. For registration information, contact our office.
All-in-all, we have a full slate of new and exciting programs this season and we looking forward to a fantastic year at Glen Meadows!
Sincerely,
Paul Addison
President, Glen Meadows Curling Association
P.S. Good Curling !!!
