What is the Future of Power?

My answer:

Restraint over the exercise of power is central to both the example of Christ and to our democratic politics. The central theme of Christ's life is the refusal to be the 'King of the Jews', to exercise power. Our democratic system exists to prevent people from exercising their natural inclination to dominate rather than serve. The inevitable extention of these examples is that power in the future will be very closely watched and widely dispersed in all instances except in emergencies, eg in to control violence. As one concrete example, those who spend money which is not their own on goods and services, eg managers, will need to spend the money in strict adherence to well-written rules, that come both from the owners and the community. These rules would include complete openess, fairness, rationality, and delegation to the lowest possible level. Hiearchies will lose their current meaning and the working relationship will be more in the nature of a contract between the community, the owners and the employees.
