St. Cosmas (d. 303) and Damien. According to legend, Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers born in Arabia. They studied medicine in Syria and then lived at Aegeae, Cilicia, and became widely known for their great medical skills, which they offered without charge to all. As outstanding Christians, they were arrested during a persecution of Christians, tried before Lysisias, governor of Cilicia, torutured, and then beheaded for their faith. Their three brothers, Anthimus, Euprepius, and Leontius, also died with them. Many miracles were reported after their deaths, and they are the patrons of barbers and of physicians after Luke. September 26.
