CUPE negotiates groundbreaking
leave for grandparents

Ron Levesque, CUPE

The 100 clerical employees, members of CUPE Local 1145 at Red Deer College, have successfully negotiated a day off with pay for members for the birth of a grandchild.

The ground breaking new grandparent clause simply recognizes the demographics in our workplace," said Clark Daniels, President of CUPE Local 1445. "Although we hate to admit it, our workforce is aging. Many of our members will be able to use this day to support the new parents and celebrate the birth of their new grandchild."

The new clause which took effect July 1st was just one of many changes negotiated to the collective agreement between CUPE Local 1445 and the College. CUPE Local 1445 will also receive a 7% wage increase over two years plus cost of living increases if inflation exceeds 4% in 2001 and 3% in 2002.
