Art exhibit challenges people to think about "social justice"
EDMONTON -- Starting tomorrow evening, the Latitude 53 gallery will be hosting a exhibit of "activist art."
The show, entitled Light a Match, will feature the work of a number of Alberta artists working in a variety of media -- everything from weaving of non-traditional materials to photography and video.
The exhibit will bring together recognized and emerging local artists whose work explores a variety of social issues including: the role of women in the labour force; the globalization of commerce; the inhumanity of war; the pain and lost history of the First Nations people; the history of organized labour; and the suffering endured by persecuted minorities.

Light a Match is an exhibit that shows that artists can make people think about their values and beliefs. It also demonstrates that art can be used to expose the troubling realities of our society.
The art exhibit is just one of several events planned this week to help celebrate May Day, the international working class holiday.
