March and rally planned to celebrate May Day

EDMONTON -- Union members from Edmonton and around the province will participate in a march and rally over the lunch hour tomorrow to celebrate May Day, the international working class holiday.

People will gather at Giovanni Caboto Park at 11:30 a.m. and march to Sir Winston Churchill Square for a rally at noon.

Speakers at the rally will include Audrey Cormack, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL); Alex Grimaldi, president of the Edmonton and District Labour Council (EDLC); Raj Pannu, New Democrat MLA for Edmonton-Strathcona; and Eugene Plawiuk, spokesperson for the Edmonton May Day Committee.

What: May Day March and Rally
When: Saturday, May 2, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: March starts at Giovanni Caboto Park (95 St. and 109 Ave.)
Rally starts at noon in Sir Winston Churchill Square

"The past year has been a good one for the Alberta labour movement," says Cormack.

"Thousands of working people -- from clerks and cashiers at Safeway to nurses and support staff at hospitals -- have won respect and better contracts by standing up for themselves. The march and rally will be an opportunity for us to celebrate our solidarity and our success."
