Born in the Diocese of Tuam, in the Parish of Aughaval, Republic of
Ireland. Christening witnessed by Pat Duffy and Maria Grady. His religion
was Catholic. Is supposed to have served in the Irish Guards during
the 1914 - 1918 War. Occupation shown as a gardener (Not Domestic) on
his son's birth certificate, Henry Scahill. Death certificate shows
Austin worked as a timber carrier. Burial plot purchased by Isabella
Scahill of 124 Gill Street Pendleton Mar 2/31 His wife Isabella allways
called him Tom - but no records exist to show he had a middle name.
My mother Maud Scahill told me about his wife allways calling him Tom.
Affy is a seldom used abbreviation of Austin, taken from a pet version ofthe Irish Aibhistin.

Adopted by the family. Once she put all her savings in a wash boiler
that was not working at the time. She had hidden it there for safe keeping.She
came home from work one day to find that Isabella Scahill had had the
wash boiler fixed and was heating up the water to wash the bed sheets."Oh
Jesus" she said "My money". All her saving, what little there was had
gone up in smoke.
