Hello Family & Friends:
A very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to your
family from ours. Our door is always open to family and friends.
Well first of all, I have to apologize for this letter
and card being late. Our Postal Service has only recently gone back
to work after being on strike for better pay and conditions. Merry Christmas
to them too...
In June, my niece Elaine, spouse Tony and their children
Christopher and Michelle came out to Medicine Hat. They stayed with
my niece Jackie, Elaine’s sister. As luck would have it, I had planed
some vacation for this time period so we were able to spend some time
together. We had one great day of visiting second hand stores. Tony
managed to find some 78 albums and wax cylinders of an old music player
he has. Apparently he would have paid 3 times as much in England. Elaine
was looking for a concertina, but we never did find one.
This past year has been the year of golf. Gloria and
I joined the weekly men’s and ladies' leagues at Cottonwood Coulee Golf
Course. On July the 4th. American Independence Day became "Hole-in-day"
for me. I wont bore you with the details, but the hole was a par 3,
running 115 yards and I used a nine iron. As luck would have it. Gloria,
my son Gary, daughter-in-law Holly were playing with me and my granddaughter
Sarah was caddying. Both the golf ball and the score card are safely
locked away.
This has been the first year in a while that we never
went anywhere for a vacation. We spent three weeks in Medicine Hat and
just golfed. Sometimes I think those are the best kind of holidays.
No driving or rushing from place to place, just sitting on our own back
deck after hitting a little white ball for four hours was one of our
most relaxing holidays ever. We both went to Vancouver October. I was
there on a two day course and Gloria came along to see the sites. I
think mostly she saw the insides of department stores. Thanks to my
company, I did so much flying on business from September to November,
that I received a free flight to anywhere in North America from Air
Canada. This flight has to be taken by June 15, 1998. So we have been
racking our brains as to where to go. We thought about Florida and California
and all the nice warm places in the States, but we finally decided to
go to Vancouver Island this April. Reason being the American dollar
is worth far more than ours right now and the exchange rate would make
it too expensive. The last time we were on the Island, was in 1980.
We plan on B&B’ing it and taking our golf clubs.
Gloria’s family is planning a family re-union this
coming July. They hold one every three years and alternate between the
U.S. and Canada. We missed the last one in 1994 in the State of Washington
on the West coast. Gloria has volunteered to be Treasurer for this event.
Most of you can expect to see Gloria and myself again
in 1999. It will be our 25th Wedding Anniversary then and we plan on
visiting England & Ireland on that trip. We would like to spend
a little more time in Ireland this time doing some genealogical research
and golfing.
Take care of yourselves and if you ever plan on coming
this side of the pond there is always a room for you.
With love and best wishes. Merry Christmas and a very
Happy New Year.
Best wishes from Allan and Gloria.
