Date: December, 2001
A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all family
and friends.
Well after 20 years with Methanex, the company I worked
for, the plant closed it's gates
on October 31st. The company sited high natural gas prices, the feedstock
to make methanol, and low methanol prices as its reasons for closing
the plant. Before being "fired", the company was nice enough to give
me my anniversary award, which was a 32" digital TV set, a golden handshake
and an offer of additional financing if we decided to start our own
business. Gloria handed in her notice at the senior's home where she
works. Her last day is December 16th.
Gloria and I have purchased a delicatessen not far from
our home called Deli City, we take possession at 6:00 PM on December
31st; our first day of business is January 2nd. We are changing the
name to Deli Heights as the deli is situated in an area called Crescent
Heights. Gloria is going to be the cook and I will be working the front
end and doing deliveries. I have always wanted to own an Internet café
ever since being in Ireland 1999. We used them all the time to send
and receive messages from home, well now I have the opportunity. We
plan on putting one computer terminal in for now and seeing how it goes,
if it looks promising then in 2003 we will install another computer.
Apart from serving meals, the deli also caters to various
functions and business meetings by providing food trays and hot meals.
My job will be to deliver these meals. Anyone who knows Gloria is aware
of her prowess as a cook. She has always wanted to own her own restaurant,
and many times we have talked about how to do this. Being fired was
a blessing in disguise; we will do everything to make a go of this business
and plan on developing a web site so that local customers will be able
to order meals through it. If anyone has any great but simple recipes
for either meals or desserts, please send them to us and we will try
them out.
Other news. Gary, my son is continuing his education
to obtain his Computer Drafting certificate. In November Gary played
for his college in the Canadian Nationals Soccer Championships. They
were held here in Medicine Hat. At the end of one game, he was chosen
the most valuable player for is team and was awarded with a really nice
blanket.
Our grandchildren are doing well at school. In June,
Angela received an award for being the top student in her class. Sarah
and Brian are also on their respective schools honor rolls. Sarah will
be working Saturdays at Deli Heights starting in January.
Holly is still the best-liked employee by the customers
at Totem Supplies. If you need to attach a doohickey to a watchamacallit,
Holly knows the exact thingamajig that will do the job.
I got lucky again this year… On July 7th I managed to
get my third hole-in-one at Redcliff Golf Course. Par 3, 145 yards with
a nine iron. Gloria missed this one :-(
On December 21st, Gloria's Aunt, Emma Rasch, passed away.
Emma was 96.
With love and best wishes. Merry Christmas and a very
Happy New Year.
Best wishes from Allan and Gloria.
