What is Wing Chun Kung Fu?

There are many any styles of martial arts all of them at the core are fighting arts. Some styles such as Tae Kwon Do and Wushu have evolved into performance or sport oriented arts. Others such as Tai Chi are used to promote health. Even with Chinese Kung Fu, there is an enormous variety of style and interpretation of principles and purpose.

Wing Chun is a system developed out of the Shaolin Monastery specifically designed to be able to defeat bigger and stronger opponents and to compress the learning cycle from 20 plus years to around 5 to 7 years.. The popular story as told by Grand Master Yip Man is that a Shaolin nun fleeing the attack of the monastery by the emperor fled to southern China and passed on her knowledge to a girl named Wing Chun. Wing Chun passed on her knowledge to her  husband and on down the line.

The famous movie star and martial artist Bruce Lee learned Wing Chun kung fu from Yip Man, a famous kung fu
teacher who is also my kung fu great grandfather (my teacher’s, teacher’s, teacher). In other words, I am third generation to Yip Man and Bruce Lee would be like a great uncle.

What are the benefits of learning Wing Chun?
