Welcome to the How-To Page
Santa Head
(1 bleach bottle makes 2 heads)
Materials:
1 white bleach bottle
2 balls white yarn
Glue gun or white glue
Scissors
2 google eyes
Approx 41 white pipe cleaners
Red felt
Flesh colored felt
1 gold bell or red pompom for his hat
1 red 1/2 inch pompom for nose
1 Nail
Lets prepare for the face.
TIP: I found heating the nail on the stove makes things
fast and easy as it melts through the plastic like butter.
Be sure to wear gloves or wrap the end, as the nail will get hot
and you don't want to burn yourself.
1. Punch 7 holes about 1/2 inch apart, 1/2 inch from the edge,
down the sides of the bottle.
2. Punch 10 holes across the bottom of the bottle about 1 1/4
inches from the bottom
3. Punch 16 holes across the middle of the bottle directly under
the bottom edge of the hat.
Lets build a hat.
1. Using the red felt, cut 2 triangle pieces. 9 1/2 inches at the
base of the hat and 15 inches in height.
2. Put the triangles together and sew along the long edges. Flip
the sewed side in. wa la! We have a hat!
3. Attach your bell or pompom to the tip of the hat on the
finished side. A few stitches will hold this in place.
4. Glue the hat in place along the side to side seam line on the
outside of the bottle hiding the handle of the bleach
bottle under the hat.
Lets grow some hair and a beard.
The easiest way I found to do this is to build a pattern. How I
did this was I found a cardboard box (something
flexiable but won't deform) and cut squares/rectangles out and
wrapped the yarn around it, getting the exact hair
length needed everytime.
We need our finished loops to be:
Quantity - Size
10 - 12" loops
2 - 10" loops
2 - 9" loops
2 - 8" loops
3 - 7" loops
2 - 6" loops
2 - 5" loops
2 - 4" loops
16 - 2 1/2" loops
1. Cut out your cardboard square/retangles to length.
For example : we need a 12 " loop you will cut out a 12"
square/rectangle. The width is not important it can be
anything, just make sure you have enough cardboard to hold a fair
amount of yarn when winding. The length
will be 12" . You will only need one piece of cardboard in this
length and label it with a felt pen I labeled mine
**** 12" x 10 **** That tells me, I need 10 pieces of the 12"
loop. Simple enough! You can do this for all
your pattern pieces to make things easier in the future if you
decide to build another one.
2. Now you should have all your pattern pieces cut out. 9 in
total. Labeled and ready to go.
3. Take your first pattern square and begin winding the yarn
around the cardboard. Remember we are wrapping
the length. Try to set the loose end slightly over the center of
the cardboard pattern to make things easy when
we tie it off. This helps make the finished hair piece look more
tidy, rather than loose ends hanging. We will
wrap the yarn until we have 20 loops. Count as you wrap. Once you
have completed the 20 loops, cut your
yarn away from the ball making sure once again, your loose end is
slightly off center of the pattern. Carefully
slide the loop off the cardboard (bending the cardboard slightly
helps remove the loop). Once you have
removed it from the cardboard, find the center of the loop and
secure it with a pipe cleaner and twist tight. Be
sure to not trim the pipe cleaners, we will need the length later
for attaching the hair. What you see now is
basically 2 smaller loops with a pipe cleaner in the center. If
you see this, you're doing fabulous!
4. Continue until you have all your required loops completed. 41
pieces total.
5. Keep your piece of hair in piles with their pattern piece so
you know what length they are.
Now we have everything prepared and ready to assemble.
1. Take your flesh colored felt, and cut it to fit between the
bottom of the hat and the holes on the bottom and sides.
2. Attaching the hair and beard.
Insert one of the 2 1/2 inch loop pieces in each of the 16 holes
under the bottom edge of the hat. Twist the ends
together in the back.
Starting with the 4 inch loop going down the sides, put first the
4 inch then 5,6,7,8,9,and finally the 10 inch
loops in each of the 7 side holes on each side of the face. Twist
the pipe cleaner in the back to the pipe cleaner
beside it. This will hold the hair in place all around the face.
Now insert the ten 12 inch loops in the ten holes across the
bottom.
3. Glue on the nose. (pompom) 2 1/2 inches from the edge of the
bottom of the hat and 4 3/4 inches from the side edges.
4. Glue the two google eyes above and to each side of the nose.
5. Cut a circle of red felt 1" in diameter for the mouth and glue
1/2 inch below the nose
Applying the moustache.
There are 2 ways to finish off the moustache. I will explain both
and you can decide which way you would like to do it.
The way I did it as in the picture.
Punch a hole under the nose between the nose and mouth. Insert one
of the 7 inch yarn loops here for the mustache.
Take each end of the moustache and twist. Pull it out away from
the mouth and angle up a wee bit. If you like how
it looks mark with a pencil on the felt and punch a hole on each
side to attach the moustache. Attach a pipe cleaner
to each end of the moustache and feed through the holes. twist in
the back to secure.
Another variation is to:
Punch a hole under the nose between the nose and mouth. Insert one
of the 7 inch yarn loops here for the mustache.
Hang the moustache leaving it loose, do not twist it. If you like
how it looks mark with a pencil on the felt and punch a
hole on each side to attach the moustache. Attach a pipe cleaner
to each end of the moustache and feed through the holes.
Twist in the back to secure.
Optional.
6. You can add cheeks if you like as well. Cut 2 circles of red
felt 1" in diameter glue to each side of the nose.
WA LA! Santa is created!

Remove label from clean bleach bottle. Use knife and cut
bottle in half length wise, so you have half a handle and half a spout.
