It is very much like being in the eye of a storm here between hosting the TSFC National Conference last September and our upcoming gala, Trains, Planes and Auctionables on March 20, 2007. The excitement of the conference has passed and the anticipation of the gala is building. Many thanks to Edmonton Sunrise Rotary for supporting us through this remarkable event. In this quiet (er) time we are still getting lots done. We ran a volunteer training workshop in January that provided attendees with an understanding of what is involved in both in-service presentations and family support. We manned display booths at an Academy at King Edward information day, the North Central Teachers’ Convention and the Greater Edmonton Teachers’ Convention. We provided financial support which enabled the Calgary Resource Unit to have a booth at the Calgary Teachers’ Convention and are providing similar support for Tanya Fix, our representative in Grande Prairie, to have a booth at the Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention. In February we had one of the largest support group meetings we have ever hosted. Word has certainly gotten around. If our numbers continue to grow we will run several smaller meetings to allow everyone to be heard. The demand for in-service presentations is also growing. Not only are we presenting to both teachers and students, this month we gave a presentation to the Boys and Girls Club of Edmonton staff. In addition, our In-Service Chair, Vonnie Zupan, has been asked to provide an inservice presentation at the University of Alberta to teaching students who are specializing in special education. This presentation will have far reaching effects throughout the education system in Alberta. When I see the impact we are having as an organization on the education system in Alberta, on those affected by TS and on the general public I am thrilled. I can honestly say that I spend less time worrying about my son’s future because I am confident that he will grow up in amore understanding world.
