Want to know more about a specific location? Dive right in -- Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips. Fly from space to your neighborhood. Type in an address and zoom right in; tilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings; save and share your searches and favorites and even add your own annotations. Google Earth is the perfect tool for exploring the geography of a country, searching out famous landmarks of cities under study, or learning how latitude and longtitude work. Parents should give themselves some time at this site first because it is hard to share the keyboard at this site! (Google Earth is a free download and does not load any spyware on your computer.)

Tar Heel Reader is a great resource for beginning or struggling readers and English language learners. This collection of free, easy-to-read, and accessible books has the option to be read silently or read aloud. Each book can be speech enabled and accessed using multiple interfaces (i.e. switches, alternative keyboards, touch screens, and dedicated AAC devices). The finished books may be downloaded as slide shows in PowerPoint, Impress, or Flash format and can be opened in Apple’s Keynote and put on an iPod (Nano, Classic, or Touch) for mobile reading.
Besides reading a book, students also have the option of creating their own books. Ideas for using Tar Heel Reader might include having teachers, parents, or students create custom stories with meaningful photos (field trip, social stories, personal, or retelling another story), make a student a main character in the story, have older students create books for younger students around curriculum topics, or use created stories with an interactive white board (SMART Board) for whole group instruction.

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends. How does this fit with curriculum? Think about brainstorming everything you know about a concept (friendship, respect, Alberta, bridges etc) as a review for a unit of study. Teachers... could you use Wordle for assessment?
