Now this is cool! SAM Animation has been selected as a "Cool UDL Tool" - Universal Design for Learning - which means SAM Animation has been designed to give students (even really young ones) the power of making stop-action animations to share their ideas and understanding. The environment provides a unique experience for students to grapple with challenging problems in mathematics, science, engineering, and more as they engage in the process of generating animations.

Okay. Now this is exciting... Storybird is a social media service that believes collaborative storytelling can be social, fun, and easy. It encourages literary exploration by encouraging students to make short, visual stories using illustrations created by artists for use on Storybird. To get inspired, explore some art or a theme and then start creating! Make sure you watch the Tour and read the FAQ. Storybird is free.

More and more I am coming across excellent web applications that can be used in the classroom (or at home) to support learning and engage students. Why couldn't these tools have been available when I was a student in school??? What a great time to be a student AND a teacher!

NEW! Tar Heel Reader
http://tarheelreader.org
Tar Heel Reader is a great resource for beginning or struggling readers and English language learners. This collection of free, easy-to-read, and accessible books has the option to be read silently or read aloud. Each book can be speech enabled and accessed using multiple interfaces (i.e. switches, alternative keyboards, touch screens, and dedicated AAC devices). The finished books may be downloaded as slide shows in PowerPoint, Impress, or Flash format and can be opened in Apple’s Keynote and put on an iPod (Nano, Classic, or Touch) for mobile reading.

Besides reading a book, students also have the option of creating their own books. Ideas for using Tar Heel Reader might include having teachers, parents, or students create custom stories with meaningful photos (field trip, social stories, personal, or retelling another story), make a student a main character in the story, have older students create books for younger students around curriculum topics, or use created stories with an interactive white board (SMART Board) for whole group instruction.

To create a book of your own you will need to register for free. For a fun read and to see patterning using The Very Hungry Caterpillar, check out The Hungry Bear under Fairy and Folk Tales.
