Willa was born at Islay, Alberta, Canada, on 4 April 1940. She was the daughter of Durward Leslie Bowman and Margaret McCambridge. As of 23 July 1960,her married name was Byrt. (an unknown value). Willa Margaret Bowman died on 4 December 2007 at Lloydminster Hospital, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 67; She died from cancer. She was buried on 10 December 2007 at Kitscoty, Alberta, Canada; Eulogy by Betty Evans

Willa Margaret entered this world at Islay Alberta April 4th 1940, the eldest daughter of Durward and Margaret Bowman. She grew up on the family farm at Dewberry along with her parents, older brother Leslie and her younger sister Carole.

Willa leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Jim; two sons, Clayton and his wife Esther, of Slave Lake; Owen and his wife Michelle of Lloydminster; four grandchildren, Kristen and her special friend,Tobi; Nichole and her special friend, Randy; Dallen and Delane; two great gandchildren, Hunter and Mason; her brother, Leslie and wife Dorothy; her sister Carole and husband Barren; her mother-in-law Joyce Byrt; 5 brothers-in law; 5 sisters-in -law; her special neices and nephews, numerous other relatives and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents Margaret and Durward Bowman; father-in-law Stan Byrt, infant grandaughter Diana Rae, and grandson Justin.

Willa began her schooling at Deer Lake doubling on horseback behind Leslie to attend the first three years. Then on her own she loved to ride her dear horse Flicka to school and come home in the cutter with the De Fords. High school saw her attending Dewberry, then on to the Dormitory in Kitscoty to take her grade eleven. It was during the days at Kitscoty High that she met Jim Byrt who later became THE man in her life.

With no power or water on the farm, youngsters had to find their own means of entertainment. Willa enjoyed harassing her brother, even going so far as to lock him in the barn. She had a constant little shadow by the name of Carole that she sometimes had to bribe so she wouldn't tattle on her smoking. Often when chores were done, she would talk her Dad into a game of cards or crokinole. She enjoyed the outdoors and would help in the fields or wherever else she could. Once, while helping Edsel Bowman, her long hair became caught in the auger shaft. Thanks to Dr.Sweet and his special ointment she was not permanently bald. This probably accounts for Willa always keeping her hair short.

In 1955, Willa graduated as a Certified Nursing Aide and worked in the Royal Alex Hospital in Edmonton. This medical knowledge was shared with her neices and nephews in later years. Terri referred to her as Dr. Willa ..often phoning for advice. For some reason she was also dubbed Detective Willa!

On July 23, 1960 she and Jim were married, making their home first in Edmonton and then Lloydminster. They were blessed with two sons; Clayton, born in 1961 and Owen two years later. In 1974 they built their present home on the acreage East of Kitscoty, near the farm where Jim had grown up. Family was all- important to Willa. She never babied their boys, spoiled maybe, but never babied. They were expected to help at home, keep up with their school work and above all, to be honest and respectful. She always stood up for the boys when troubles arose but expected them to take their punishment if they did wrong. You never lied to Willa unless you wanted to be blacklisted. She loved the fact that the grandkids were near and could spend so much time at Gram's house.

All the family were kept well supplied with fresh veggies out of her big garden each year. Wade somehow missed out on his allotment of potatoes one fall. ( You devil, David! ) One spring Michelle decided she would like to plant a little so Willa gave her a small space in the garden. With a growing family to keep her busy, Michelle didn't get time to come out and weed and Willa certainly wasn't about to do it for her. Unable to tolerate the weeds, Willa solved the problem by jumping on the cultivator and plowing Michelle's patch under!

Willa enjoyed watching the birds and made sure they, too, were well fed. There was always at least one dog or a cat, or maybe both on the acreage which she spoiled just as she did her little ones. Countless trips were made to Vermilion to check on Mom and Dad. Following Margaret's death she added meals on wheels to the trips to her father's.

After family, Willa's greatest love was softball. She was a top notch first basewoman, had a wicked arm, and was a great hitter but not exactly the fastest base-runner on the team. Willa was very proud to have been a member of the Kitscoty Klippers who won three Provincial Championships. She also played and coached the Borderettes and the Precisions out of Lloydminster. Many of the young girls on these teams remained close friends, visiting Willa whenever possible.

Willa also enjoyed a little gambling so in 1970 when Jim had a business trip to make to the US, Willa, Barren and Carole decided to go along and stop in Reno while Jim carried on to his destination. The girls couldn't wait to hit the casino each morning and Barren was missing his breakfasts. One morning he insisted they should eat first but in their haste Willa took off with curlers still in her hair. They stayed to play a little and Willa struck it lucky! She always took her winnings and stashed them in a safe place at the hotel so with jackpot in hand she headed back to their room, fully intending to remove said curlers before returning. The excitement of the win was too much, however, and she arrived back at the casino with the hardware still on her head.

Willa delivered the Booster for 20 years, making the run twice a week in all kinds of weather. She sometimes took Kristen or Justin along to help on the weekend trips. This gave her more time with them and taught them that life was not all sunshine... it sometimes involved hard work. She enjoyed every minute of her time with the grandchildren and taught them a lot about life. She delighted in taking Dad along on many of her Booster trips as well and they enjoyed a lunch of good salmon sandwiches together. The Booster gang became her second family. Willa could often be seen along our road slowly driving her quad, picking bottles and cans from the ditches. She must have been dissatisfied with the recycling services in the area as when the Marwayne Bottle Depot came up for sale, she and friend Sandra went into business, running a little coffee shop along with the Depot. It was a tough, back-breaking job, but Willa was never afraid of hard work. When her birthday rolled around , I decided to surprise her with a 50th birthday cake so Kristen and I headed to Marwayne to see Grandma. It wasn't until after "Happy Birthday" was sung, the candles blown out, and the cake devoured that Willa informed me I was out a year on my calculations! So who had the surprise?

After retiring from bottle counting, Willa followed another of her passions. She and Sandra would load up the camper in the truck and it was off for the weekend to the chuckwagon races, following the circuit wherever it went. I'd like to have been a mouse in the corner on some of these trips!

Life isn't always easy, but Willa seemed to have more than her share of hard knocks. She spent a lot of time on crutches due to broken bones. Kirk used to kid her that there really wasn't much calcium in that beer. Somehow she always managed to rise above her adversities and kept a positive attitude. She was definitely not a whiner. Although I don't recall ever hearing that Willa had picked a fight, she managed to get heself involved in a few. It was best to stay on her good side because I understand she packed a pretty powerful punch. Right, Barren?

Willa took great pride in her vehicles. Whatever she drove she kept immaculately clean, washing and polishing it by hand. You never knew just what she might be driving because they changed quite frequently. Her greatest desire was to someday own a convertible which she finally did one summer. It stayed around just long enough for everyone including Kirk's mother to have a spin in it, then she traded it off.

I first came to really know Willa when she and Jim moved to the acreage. She became my neighbor, my friend,
my co-worker, and my confidant. This is when I came to see a different side of Willa than was usually displayed in public, one that you, her family and close friends knew. Beneath that tough, hard exterior was a kind, tender heart. She was like a diamond in the rough! There was nothing phony or artificial about this gal! What you saw was what you got. She simply hated it when people acted "holier than thou." You always new exactly where you stood with her. Getting all dolled up was not to her liking either. Simple blue jeans and sweatshirts were much more comfortable and practical. And what a terrific cook! Here again, nothing fancy, just plain good-tasting grub! Cheryl claims her gravy and potato salad were the best in the world! As a neighbor, you couldn't ask for better. She minded her own business yet was always there to help in a crunch. In early spring, my garden was cultivated for the meagre fee of a beer and a friendly visit. Winter brought out the skidoos with lots of fun riding across the pasture between our places but I opted out when she started her long treks to and from Dewberry. Many a night Willa would stop in on her way home from the hotel and we would spend hours discussing our personal problems or trying to set the world straight. Believe me, things would be a lot different with the two of us running the show! I never had to worry about our conversations going any further, nor did Willa In the event that my lights were out she would drop in on Mum Evans for a neighborly chat. Willa was minus a driver's licence when they moved to the acerage so didn't get out much. They were also living in a small travel trailer while the house was being built. Kirk & I decided time might be a little draggy in the evenings so we started Saturday night card games, either at their place or ours. Willa was a cut-throat card player (as the Garniers would probably agree) and if the boys managed to win ( which wasn't often) it was usually through some stupid play on my part. Our kids became close friends, the girls spending much of thier free time at the Byrt's. They thought the world of Willa! It was Willa who dropped in to check on Barb when we were away for the winter, often bringing her some of that famous potato salad of hers. On one occasion she brought a whole ice cream pail full for Barb to share with the rest of the Evans clan across the road. I understand that none of them ever got to even sample it, however, as Barb hoarded it and ate the whole bucketful herself. It was Willa, too, who saw that Barb wasn't alone the day of her Dad's funeral. But it was also Willa who pulled our power off at the pole come Hallowe'en night! Willa was always up for a challenge, so when the Public Trustee needed someone to clean up Robbie Caldecott's house she and friend Lorraine tackled the job. Then she somehow convinced me that we should take on the task of maintenance. Twice a week we would go in to clean house, do laundry, and make certain both Robbie and all her cats were well fed. I could write a best-seller of our experiences on this job! Or perhaps a cartoon strip would be even better! In all of our times working together, never had I heard Willa swear. Never, that is, until the day precious Tommy escaped on us. Willa's voice was as sweet as honey as she coaxed old Tom to come back but when Tommy hissed and turned on her. Willa's language became profane! I finally captured the rascal but had a dreadful time not laughing in front of Robbie who was very distraught by the whole episode.

This gal had a talent for writing both prose and poetry. One of my proudest posessions is a poem she wrote and had mounted on a plaque as a gift for our 40th Anniversary. Her writing brought out the inner Willa. There are so many more stories I could tell but you will all have your own special memories to cherish and share. Willa believed in living life to the full. She loved her ball, her cards, a little gambling, trips to the lake, family get togethers, her rodeos and chuck wagon races.

And she especially loved her family. Each and every one of you was very special to her. How wonderful that she was able to see and hold those two little great-grandsons this fall. There will never be another,Willa. for she was one of a kind.......one of God's unique creations. We all loved you, gal. We'll miss you. See you later!

Edith was born at Deer Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada, on 27 July 1931. She was the daughter of Hugh Rutherford Rose and Edna Icephene Looney. As of 10 December 1953,her married name was Catudal. Edith Virginia Rose was ill with delusional disorder or schizophrenia, adult onset diabetes, breast and bone cancer, kidney failure and emphysema. in 2004. She died on 5 August 2005 at Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, at age 74; CATUDAL - EDITH VIRGINIA: Mrs. Edith “Margaret” Catudal, nee Rose, passed away on Friday, August 5th, 2005 at the age of 74 years.
Edith also leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Napolean of Blackfoot, Alberta; her children, Sharry (Don) Michels of Redcliff, Nathan (Sandi) Catudal of Lloydminster, and Esther (Clayton) Byrt of Slave Lake; two grandsons, Brandon Michels and Delane Byrt; and step-granddaughter, Kristen Byrt.
Edith was predeceased by her parents, Hugh and Edna Rose; one sister, Oletta Rose, all of Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan; one brother, George Rose; and her step-grandson, Justin Byrt.
Someone we love is gone. A mother, a friend, a gentle spirit who always wanted to really know the people she encountered. Every nurse and Special Transit driver had a name and a personal history that Edith never failed to take an interest in. Most of all, her family always knew she was there – a rock, a solid unwavering presence in their lives. She will be missed.
Edith, who in her later years preferred to be known as Margaret, was born on July 27th, 1931 on the family homestead near Paradise Hill. Homestead life was hard in those days but rewarding. Edith often spoke of life on the farm and the one-room schoolhouse in Deer Creek that she attended as a child. She told stories of pigtails being dipped in ink wells by scalawag boys, riding her horse to school and her dislike of math.
As a young woman she moved to Calgary, where she worked as a telephone operator and later as an elevator operator for The Hudson Bay store before taking her Registered Nursing Assistant training in Red Deer. Years later she still spoke with detailed recall of many of the people she met in her various occupations.
In 1953, when her beau rowed her out to the middle of the lake and proposed she said yes, but often joked later she was afraid she'd be swimming back if she had said no. Edith married Napolean Catudal on December 10th of that year in Calgary, Alberta. Her daughter, Sharry, was born on October 10th, 1957, son, Nathan, on June 24th, 1962 and, daughter, Esther, on May 5th, 1965.
In 1963, the family moved to Lloydminster, Alberta where Edith continued to work as an RNA for a few years before choosing to stay home with her children. She enjoyed gardening, had gorgeous flower beds and always reaped a bumper crop from her vegetable garden. She spent hours every fall canning and baking the products of her labour; and handed that knowledge down to her daughters. In her spare time she loved to read, with a particular enjoyment of history, and passed on her love of reading to all of her children. She also enjoyed camping and fishing and would pack up the family nearly every weekend in the summer to go to the lake. Some of the fondest memories they shared were of the times spent sleeping in a tent, fishing and swimming every day and telling ghost stories around the campfire at night. In season, she would always make sure they came home with buckets of berries for baking pies and canning.
Edith had a generous soul and was always willing to open her home to someone in need. She enjoyed people, had a terrific sense of humour and loved to socialize. When she couldn't catch up with someone in person she wrote long, chatty letters and never forgot a friend. She cherished her memories of the times past and always made sure to take plenty of pictures to commemorate every occasion.
In 1985 Edith and her husband separated after raising their family. Edith moved several times in the years that followed but after settling in Medicine Hat near her oldest daughter, said she liked The Hat better than any other place she’d lived.
Despite all the illness and challenges she faced in her life, her indomitable spirit and her love of God and nature sustained her to the end. During her 10 year battle with cancer, and later kidney failure, she never lost her appreciation for the beauty of the world around her. She was an uncomplaining patient and any nurses who spoke of her commented on her kind spirit and smiling eyes. She passed on with quiet acceptance like the gentle lady she was.
The Funeral Service was held in Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, #1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, on Tuesday, August 9th, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Blaine Schaufele, officiating.
Interment followed at Redcliff Cemetery.
