Joseph was born at Monroe Co., Virginia, USA, in 1793. He was the son of Joseph Rose and Catherine (Bausman) Bowsman. He married Susannah Daugherty at Monroe Co., West Virginia, USA, on 1 April 1815. Joseph Henry Rose was census 1850 - free on 15 July 1850 at Bloomfield Township, Jackson County, Ohio, USA; He was a shoe maker. He was census 1860 - free on 23 June 1870 at Beaver Township, Pike County, Ohio, USA; He was farming. Bethsaday and Adaline were keeping house for him. There is in Jackson County, Ohio the marriage record of Joseph H. Rose to Elizabeth Edwards January 26, 1848 but it isn't known if this is the same person. He appears not to have a wife in the 1850 census as follows: Jackson County, Ohio, Bloomfield Twp. p 227, Joseph H. Rose 54, born Virginia, Shoemaker, Amanda 13 b. Ohio, Isabell 11 b. Ohio, Bethsaday 8 b. Ohio, Ransom 6 b. Ohio and Adaline 1 b. Ohio.

A descendant, Dr. Donald L. Rose, indicates that his father's research shows that Joseph Henry Rose married April 1, 1815 to Susannah Daugherty and on January 26, 1848 married Elizabeth Edwards. But he also shows Joseph Henry as having married a Nancy Holmes and Agnes Bowsman but had no dates for the marriages. There is also an IGI record showing a Joseph Henry Rose marrying an Agnes Holcomb March 27, 1836 in Gallia County, Ohio. Given the name, the other two undocumented marriages could both refer to this one, just some name confusion.

Joseph Henry Rose apparently sold or gave 40 acres to Amanda, Isabelle and Bethsaday and their husbands sometime between 1867 and 1874 in Pike County, Ohio. Further, on December 26, 1874, Ransom Rose bought this 40 acres from his sisters and their husbands for $100.00. Ransom and his wife Jane sold this on January 20, 1880. Joseph died on 17 March 1874 at Meadow Pike Run, Jackson Co., Ohio, USA.
