Cora was a midwife in the Carp, MN area. She also provided other medical care as there were few doctors and few could afford to go to one. She treated sick people and gave instructions on keeping homes clean and healthy. She instructed her husband, Ellis, in how to deliver Charlotte, their last child. She also delivered Charlotte's first two children. Dr. Brink, a long time physician in Baudette in the mid 1900's, told her daughter Chalotte that Cora "knew what she was doing". According to a history of Carp, MN, "Mrs. Cora Bowman can rememer walking the trails caring for the less fortunate, the elderly, and the ill, asking for little or nothing in return. She could be called and angel of mercy in disguise." Cora was born on 22 January 1877. She was the daughter of Elijah Pappy Rice and Pheobe Smith. Levi was born at Greensboro, Henry Co., Indiana, USA, on 7 March 1841. He was the son of William W. Bowman Jr. and Elvira Hunt. He married Almarinda Clementine Neugen at Eagleton, Hamilton Co., Indiana, USA, on 14 October 1865. Levi Reynolds Bowman appeared on the census of 1870 at Washington Township, Hamilton County, Indiana, USA; His occupation was carpenter.1 He married Kate Plomteau at Middleville, Wright Co., Minnesota, USA, on 26 September 1876. Levi Reynolds Bowman appeared on the census of 1880 at Middleville, Wright Co., Minnesota, USA; Levi (or Lee) was a farmer living with his sons Elmer 12 and Eitelbert 8. The other children, William abt 6 and Mary abt 2, were not found in the census. Also his wife Kate was not found either under Bowman or Plomteau.2 Levi R. Bowman, the fourth son, moved with his family to Eagletown, Hamilton County, Indiana between 1850 and 1861. On September 18, 1861 he enlisted in Co. F of Captain Gregory's 10th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Major General Don Carlos Buell's Army of Ohio. He first saw action on January 19, 1862 at Logan's Cross Roads near Mill Springs, Kentucky. On October 24, 1862, the Army of Ohio was designated as the fourteenth Army Corps, better known as the Army of the Cumberland.
He participated in battles at Stone River, near Mufreesboro, Tennesee December 31, 1862, Middleton, Hoover's Gap, Beech Grove, Liberty Gap, and Guy's Cap, all fought between June 23 and July 7, 1863. On September 18 and 19, 1863 he fought at the famous engagement at Chickamauga Creek in Northern Georgia, where the 10th Indiana had twenty-one men killed in action, another one hundred and thirty-four wounded, including Levi R. Bowman, wounded in the left thigh.
On October 1, 1863 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and was back with the Fourteenth Corps when, on November 23, 1863, they advanced against the Confederate center to secure Orchard Knob between the Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge in Tennessee. The following day the 10th Indiana advanced across the mile-wide valley separating Ochard Knob from Missionary Ridge, and within an hour the ridge was secure and the Battle of Chattanooga was concluded.
In the spring of 1864, the Army of Cumberland, as well as the Army of the Tennessee and the Army of the Ohio united and Levi Bowman found himself under the command of General William T. Sherman. They commenced their move through Georgia on May 6, 1864, Levi participating in engagements at Rocky Face Ridge May 6-9, 1864, Resaca May 13-16, 1864, and Dallas, George May 25-June 4, 1864. He likewise fought during the June 27, 1864 assault on the slopes of the Kenesaw Mountains and during Sherman's engagement of Confederate General John B. Hood at Peach Treet Creek on July 20, 1864.
On July 22, 1864, Levi R. Bowman became involved in the most historical action of the Western Campaign - the seige of Atlanta, abandoned to Sherman's forces on September 1, 1864. With the fall of Atlanta, Levi was released from duty and travelled to Indiana, where, on September 19, 1864, he was discharged at Indianapolis.
Returning to Eagletown, Hamilton Co., Indiana, Levi took up the carpentry profession as had his brother Jabez before him. He married, in Eagletown, Almarinda Clementine Nugent (Neugen), on October 14, 1865. The marriage was performed by his uncle. Cyrus Reynolds Bowman. "Allie" Nugent was the daughter of Levi and Elizabeth Nugent, of Eagletown, Indiana and the sister of Rebecca Nugent, wife of Levi's brother William.
In 1871, on account of ill-health and the need for a change of climate, Levi brought his wife and son Elmer to Middleville Township, Wright County, Minnesota and purchased the homestead interest of Fred Peasley to eighty acres located within section 4, Middleville Township. He subsequently cleared the land and acquired an additional forty acres on the east boundary of the farm. Here he practiced his building profession as well as farming.
The 1880 census for Middleville, Wright Township, Minnesota, shows Levi as Lee Bowman, age 39, a farmer living with his sons Elmer, 12, and Eitelbert, 8. Both sons are shown as "at school".
A birth-right Quaker, he was likely disinherited by the Society of Friends for his enlistment in the Union Army. He was a member of the Republican Party and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
He was five feet eleven inches tall with blue eyes, dark hair and a light complexion.2 Levi was separated from his wife, Kate Plomteau in March 1880. Levi died on 10 October 1923 at Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota, USA, at age 82. His body was interred on 11 October 1923 at Howard Lake, Wright Co., Minnesota, USA, at Sylvan Cemetary.

Edmond was born at Somerset Co., New Jersey, USA, circa 1744. He was the son of Edmund Bowman. He married Grace Reynolds at New Jersey, USA, circa 1766. He married Margaret Watson at Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA, on 18 September 1781. Edmond Bowman served in the French Indian war as a sargeant in the 80th New York regiment under Colonel Montague Wilmot. He was discharged in New York. He applied for land in New York on March 16, 1765 as bounty for his service.
He moved with his children and second wife to North Carolina prior to 1787 and purchased 317 acres of land in Surry (later Stokes) county on November 2, 1787. He was enumerated in the Salisbury district in 1790 with three males over 16, two males under 16, and one female; Edmond, Margaret and four sons - William, Richard, George and Archilbald. An educated man and former school teacher (1761) in New Jersey, his will was drafted October 12, 1793 and probated in North Carolina in June of 1794. He mentions his wife Margaret and left his land on the south side of Belews Creek to his four sons.
Information from John D. Tanner, December 18, 1999, indicates that William Bowman was Edmond's father and the other Edmund his grandfather. This was based on information from William Bowman's great grand daughter, Miss Regina Bowman (1862-1947) of Colfax, North Carolina. Positive proof is lacking due to the destruction of the Somerset records in 1778 by Col. John Graves Simcoe's British soldiers who leveled the Somerset County Courthouse. William served in the French-Indian war, listed as Wilhelm Bauman, Corporal, in the lists of soldiers discharged from the 3rd Battalion Royal Americans on February 20, 1764 at New York.2 Edmond died in 1794 at Stokes Co., North Carolina, USA.
