     Hugh Caldwell was the son of Hugh Caldwell and Ruth Holstein. Hugh died. Hugh and Nancy moved to Knox Co., Tennessee sometime between 1809 and 1812. His sister Mary and brother-in-law, English Crawford, had already made the move. His uncle, Stephen Holstien, had been instrumental in the early exploration of the Tennessee valley. Other Caldwells from Virginia had settled here even earlier.

Hugh and English both served with the E Tennessee Army during the War of 1812. Hugh Caldwell was also known as Hu Caldwell. He married Betsy Deardorff in 1803. He married Nancy Ferrier at Botetourt Co., Virginia, USA, on 5 October 1809. He married Lucretia Gault Welch at Knox Co., Tennesee, USA, on 6 February 1825.
