Jackson was born at Montgomery Co., Virginia, USA, on 17 December 1817. He was the son of Joseph Rose and Karon Terry. He married Ruth Marie Wolfe at Alleghany Co., Virginia, USA, on 9 February 1837. Jackson Rose was census 1850 - free on 19 July 1850 at Monroe County, Virginia, USA; He was a farmer. He was census 1860 - free on 21 August 1860 at Monroe County, Virginia, USA; He was a farmer. Jackson Rose lived about two miles from where his son Hugh Caldwell Rose raised his family in Paint Bank Valley, VA.
Jackson was the center of much controversy during the Civil War, as told in "The Union Hole" by David Turk.
Jackson wouldn't join or desert during the Civil War, (he was a loyal Union man) so the militia came to his home and bodily carried him off. There was a struggle and one of his daughters, who at the time had twins nursing, was trying to help him from being taken and was stabbed with a bayonet in the breast. Later, it became infected and one of the babies nursed got the poison in it's system and died.
The men who had come to get Jackson pulled the hair out of his head and it was said the snow covered ground was black with hair from Jackson. He was hauled off to fight. Three of his sons did desert and go to Ohio for some years, because Ohio was a free state at that time. They later came back to get their families and went to live there. They were Joe, Jim and Charlie. Jim and Joe were forced to serve with the Southern army until they made their escape.
Jackson did serve as a private in Company G, then in Company E, 108 Regiment, Virginia Militia Vol. August 3 to October 13, 1861.
Jackson died in prison in Salisbury, NC., possibly from roughing up by the militia after two attempts to desert. Jackson died on 5 December 1862 at Salisbury, Rowan Co., North Carolina, USA, at age 44.

Acording to Charlotte Bowman Hamilton, Ellis moved his family from Columbia Heights, MN to Baudette, MN because the land was cheap.
They farmed a wild meadow until someone put a claim on it and told him he could not take his crop in. Later that person shot and killed a trapper who was cutting across his field, thinking that it was Ellis. He was charged with murder in Bemidji. Ellis moved his family to Carp. buying the Con Knutson place, which was later sold to Ralph Bowman. Neil Pearson now owns that property and still has the cook stove that belonged to the Bowmans. Willaim Gobble was a son and probably the youngest child of Christian Gobble and Sarah Gise. He was born in 1800 in Frederick County, Maryland and died Jun 1 1876 in Meeker County, Minnesota. His birth year is shown in his death record and agrees with his age as shown in the 1870 census of Meeker County. Census records are not in full agreement regarding the date and place of birth, also showing that he was born in 1804 in Virginia. He moved with his parents to Washington County, Virginia between 1800 and 1810.
He married Edith Phelps in Washington County about 1824; this date is indicated by the age of their eldest child, David. No record of marriage has been found, but her maiden name is shown in David's death record in Meeker County. Her first name is also shown as Cady and Eda in various records. She was still in Meeker County in 1900 at the age of 95 years, and was living with a married daughter then. It seems likely that she was living with one of her children in 1880, but no such record has been found.
The family moved to Floyd County, Kentucky, before 1840 and was there is 1850. After that county was partitioned in 1843, the family was listed in the 1860 census of Johnson County, moving to Minnesota and arriving there in August 1866. It is shown in Kingston Township in Meeker County in the 1870 census. William had 140 acres of land there, 2 cows, and 14 hogs, and was producing wheat, Indian corn, oats, potatoes and butter.
Census and other records indicate that William and Edith were the parents of the following children; David, Elizabeth, Jeremiah, John L., Matha (Patsey), Mary, Eliza, Sarah J., and George W. Jeremiah and John served in Union forces during the Civil War, the latter dying of measles in a military hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. William was born at Frederick Co., Maryland, USA, in 1800. He was the son of Christian Gobble and Sarah Gise. He married Edith Phelps in 1824. William died on 1 June 1876 at Meeker Co., Minnesota, USA.
A list in German of Palatine Emigrants to America, 1724-49, shows that from the Lichtenberg District Johann Friedrich Gabel, serf of the Offenbachj Cloister (Monastery), left for America. This list was part of the Reformed Church records in Eastern Pennsylvania. He arrived at Philadelphia August 27, 1739 with his brother Johann Philipp on the ship Samuel. It is assumed that his family accompanied him. Passenger lists do not show those travelling with family heads, but a church record shows that the older brother was accompanied by his family. The only available information about where the family settled is an entry of November 12, 1751 in the Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran Churchbook which gives the residence as Wallbrucken Township, without naming the county. It is believed that it was Philadelphia County then. A list of church members does not include family members, but various entries indicate occasional attendance by some of them.
The churchbook entries cover the period of 1751-1828. They include the confirmation May 19, 1757 of George, son of Frederick Gabel and his wife, Mary Magdalene, with birthdate October 1740. The birthdate may have been erroneous and the boy may have been Johann Georg, born 1738 in Germany. Or, that son may have died and another boy born in America may have been named George, following earlier precedent of naming a later child after a deceased child. Another entry shows the confirmation April 10, 1762 of John Nicholas, 18 years and son of Frederick Gabel. He may have been a son of Mary Magdalene. His mother is not named in the churchbook, although Frederick was married to Christiana at the time. It is believed that Mary Magdalene was his mother, that she died during or after 1744, and that she was the mother of eight children.
Christiana was the mother of at least two children as shown in the churchbook; Philip Frederick and Christian. At the time of Christian's baptism, the sponsors were his maternal grandparents who were still living in Germany. The date of Christiana's arrival in America and the date and place of her marriage are not known.
The last record of the presence of Johann Friedrich and Christiana in church was in 1758, but other family members were present as late as 1762. The next family record is in 1767 when son Frederick Gobble Jr., purchased land in Baltimore County, Maryland, and in 1768 when he sold some of this land to Christiana, with the location shown as Frederick County. The discrepancy in location has not been explained. Christiana sold the land in 1777, warranting for herself and her heirs. These transactions suggest, but do not prove, the death of Johann Friedrich prior to 1768. These events are in agreement with two statements in Christiana's application for a Revoluntionary War pension; "When I was very young my father removed to Baltimore County, Maryland" and "From this latter place my father removed to Frederick County in the same state, where he died".
In the deeds for the aforementioned land transactions the family name was shown as Gobble, as Gabel and as Goble. When Christena (Christiana) sold the land her name and that of Frederick appear as Gobble in the deed. For about another century this spelling predominates in the records.
In the early records of Wahington County, Virginia, are found the names of Frederick, Christian and Philip Gobble. Frederick and Christian are identified as half-brothers in the book Virginia and Virginians, by Brock. The identity of Philip is uncertain, but it seems likely that he was the full brother of Christian mentioned previously. He married Caty Taylor in Washington County and remianed there only a few years before moving to Sevier County, Tennessee, where he died prior to the first census (1830) of the County.
No further record of Anna Catherina has been found. Johann Georg, unmarried, was one of the sponsors at the baptism of the first child (his namesake) of his older brother Johann Friedrich Jr. in 1758. The record of baptisms shows Anna Elisabetha, unmarried, as a sponsor in 1751 and suggests that Johann Philipp was married sponsor in 1761.
On April 5, 1774 occurred the marriage of Philipp Goebel, "the late Johannes Goebel's legitimate son" to Margaret Pisekern, as recorded in the churchbook of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick, Maryland. This man may have been the son of Johann Friedrich Gabel, but positive identification is lacking; Philip Frederick would have been 22 years old at the time - of marriageable age and no doubt known by his first name. Johan died at Frederick Co., Maryland, USA. Johan was born. He was the son of Hans Jacob Gabel and Maria Margretha Rheinmueller. He was baptized on 14 April 1701. Religion: (an unknown value). He married Maria Magdalene Spiess at Germany on 22 May 1725. He emigrated, on 27 August 1739. Point of origin: an unknown place . He married Christiana Henrietta Hornberger circa 1745.

Frederick was the first member of this family whose surname was spelled in this way in the available records. At the time of his baptism October 17, 1734 in St. Julian Lutheran Church at Offenbach-am-Glan in Germany he was named Johann Friedrich Gabel. He was born there October 12, 1734 and died about 1792 in Washington County, Virginia. His father bore the same name and his mother was Marie Magdalena, daughter of Hans Georg Spiess. He probably came to America with his parents and some siblings; his father is listed as arriving at Philadelphia August 27, 1739. His name appears as early as 1754 in the Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran Churchbook, which also records his marriage May 19, 1757 to Elizabeth, daughter of George Weigel.
His long name was Johann Friedrich (Frederick) Gabel ( Gobble ). Frederick was born at Offenbach-an-Glan, Germany, on 12 October 1734. He was the son of Johan Friedrich Gabel and Maria Magdalene Spiess. He married Elizabeth Weigel at Old Goshenhoppen Church, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, USA, on 10 May 1757. In Old Goshenhoppen Church. Frederick died circa 1792 at Washington Co., Virginia, USA.

Elizabeth was born December 29, 1737 and died in Washington County, Virginia June 19 1794. Her father was the son of John Michael and Anna Maria Weigel; he was one of the elders of the Reformed Church which shared the church building with the Lutheran congregation. Her mother was Anna Margaret, daughter of Abraham and Anna Margaret Ditlich. Elizabeth was the first of at least four children of her parents, others being Anna Maria, Abraham, Henry L., and possibly John Peter, born October 6, 1758.
Their first two children were baptized in the Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania. The next two were born while the family lived in Maryland, and the last two after the reported settlement in Virginia. After the deaths of Frederick and Elizabeth, the five sons sold their fathers land in 1799 to Jacob Mongle (Mungle), the husband of Mary. The sale date suggests the postponement of sale until the youngest child was of legal age. An unofficial list of the children included Ann, with birthdate July 14, 1784. This is believed to be Isaac's wife, Anna Sargeant, whose birthdate was February 14m 1784. No other record of such a child has been found, and no mention of Ann was made in the deed to Mongle.
Two deeds in the Hall of Records at Annapolis, Maryland, date October 7, 1767 show the purchase of land in Baltimore County be Frederick Gobble Jr., a farmer in that county. The land was part of a tract known as Friendship Compleated. Three other deeds show the sale the following year of part of this land by Frederick and Elizabeth Goble of Frederick County. One parcel of this land was purchased by Christiana Goble - apparently the step-mother of Frederick. She sold the land in 1777, as recorded in Frederick County, with her name and that of Frederick appearing as Gobble.
The surveyor's record of Fincastle County, Virginia, shows a survey December 23, 1774 for Fred Gobble of 32 acres on the north side of North Fork Holston River. This county ceased to exist in 1777 when it was divided into several parts, one of which became Washington County. Among the first surveys land in that county was one of April 19, 1782 for Frederick Gobble of 100 acres on North Fork Holston River, the actual settlement of this land being listed as 1773. The land lay on both sides of the North Fork and was granted to Frederick by patent dated April 20, 1782 and signed by Patrick Henry, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The exact location of the Frederick Gobble home has not been determined; it is reported to have been on the south side of the North Fork about two miles upstream from the present river crossing of U.S. Highway 19.
Frederick and his family were among the earliest settlers in what is now Washington County. No record has been found to show that he was accompanied to Virginia by any siblings. The survey in 1793 of 50 acres for Philip Gobble and his subsequent marriage to Caty Taylor April 8, 1794 suggest that this man may have been Philip Frederick, a half-brother of Frederick. Philip Gobble purchased additional land in 1796 and 1797, then sold all three tracts as a unit in 1801 when he was a resident of Sevier County, Tennessee. Another half-brother of Frederick was Christian Gobble, who came to Washington County from Frederick County, Maryland, between 1800 and 1810, as shown by census records.
Frederick died intestate about 1792 as indicated by a survey of his land in January 1793 for his administrator, George Gobble. The inventory and appraisement of his estate is shown in Washington County Will Book 2, Page 66, in which the value of the personal property was estimated as 59 pounds, 16 shillings, or $199.33. The property included on mare, two cows and calves, six hogs, rye, oats, corn, household goods, as well as "books Dutch and English", valued at 8 shillings, 6 pence. At a court of October 29, 1795 the appraisement was ordered to be recorded. The 1799 sale of the real estate yielded $298.72.
The burial place of Frederick and Elizabeth are not known. It is stated in Virginia and Virginians, by Brock, that Frederick was buried on the North Fork. Since burial on a family farm was common practice at that time, it is believed that both were buried in graves marked by fieldstones on the home plantation.
It is interesting to note that Frederick's sons were all designated as "Senior" in many early records, although not one of them had a son named for his father. Those of the next generation were designated as "Junior" in some cases, but their names seem to be derived from Uncles.
Another item of interest is the relative longevity of the children of Frederick at a time when death at an early age was common. Even today, it is not too common for half of the children of a family to pass the eightieth anniversary of their birth. Elizabeth was born at Washington Co., Virginia, USA, on 20 December 1737. She was the daughter of George Weigel and Anna Margaret Ditlich. She married Frederick Gobble at Old Goshenhoppen Church, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, USA, on 10 May 1757. George Gobble Sr. was the first child of Frederick Gobble and Elizabeth Weigel, born February 17, 1758 in Pennsylvania. He was baptized February 25, 1758 in Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran Church and died about 1827 in Washington County, Virginia. When baptized, he was named Johann Georg Gabel, the name being anglicized only in spelling during the next decade when the family moved to Maryland.
He served as Captain in Marlyland forces during the Revolutionary War. This was after the reported settlement of the family in Virginia in 1773. His service in forces other than those of Virginia raises an unanswered question concerning his own place of residence at the time.
On September 18, 1782 he married Elizabeth Linder in Washington County.
Death dates for both spouses have been estimated from county documents, no record of death or burial haveing been found. Their graves are probably located on the home plantation near North Fork Holston River. Deed books show the sale of real estate by both spouses as late as 1823. The personal property was inventoried as directed by court order of September 16, 1827 and appraised at $437.99. In the later record of the estate settlement, Elizabeth was allowed a dower of $148.00, a payment was made to her, and more money was due her. The sale of real estate October 1, 1829 lists heirs with no mention of a widow. The administrator of the estate was John Gobble, probably the son of George. Washington County Will Book 6, page 50, shows numerous items of personal property, including cows, horses and tools.
The children of George and Elizabeth, listed as heirs in the 1829 deed, were Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sally, John, Nancy, May, Alexander, Samuel, Benjamin and Rachel. At that time Isaac was deceased and his nine children were listed as heirs. The deed shows the full names of daughters and their spouses, and first names of spouses of Abraham, Jacob, John and Alexander. No spouse of Samuel was names, although he was married the previous April. Census records of 1810 and 1820 suggest that there may have been one or two additional sons, but show no other daughters. The 1829 deed was not for the undivided interest of the listed heirs, so there is no reason to think that there were other living heirs at that time. If there were other children, as suggested by census records, it must be assumed that they were deceased without offspring prior to 1829. The death record of Ann Gobble, who married Thomas Fuller November 6, 1823 in Washington County and who died March 29, 1859 in Buchanan County, Virginia, states that her father was George Gobble. The author has found no record to indicate such a parentage, and questions the accuracy of the death record. It seems more likely that she was the daughter of Jacob Gobble and Nancy Dickenson; this suggested by 1810 and 1820 census records, but not verified by other records, including the deed for the sale of Jacob's real estate July 7, 1841. Additional research is needed to verify Ann's parents for certain.
The family lived on North Fork Holston River, northwest of Abingdon, Virginia, where George had obtained 100 acres of land by patent. The survey was dated April 19, 1782 and the patent was signed July 4, 1787 by Beverley Randolph, Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. On several occasions George bought and sold other tracts of land in the same general area of the county. His long name was George Gobble (Johann Georg Gabel). John was born at Pennsylvania, USA, on 17 February 1758. He was the son of Frederick Gobble and Elizabeth Weigel. He was baptized on 25 February 1758. Religion: (an unknown value). He married Elizabeth Linder at Washington Co., Virginia, USA, on 18 September 1782. John died circa 1827 at Washington Co., Virginia, USA.
