From the Goodridge and White Rat local history book by Donald Griffith, 1977.
"Mr. and Mrs. Magloire Catudal came from Quebec to St. Vincent in 1927. Two years later they moved to Therien. Mr. Catudal's uncle Joe Bossie, homesteaded the S.W.16-63-9-W4th on 1930. In 1931, Mr. M. Catudal (St John) homesteaded the place west of Joe Bossie's, the S.E.18-63-9-W4th. Mr. and Mrs. Catudal lived on Joe's place and built a barn on their own farm. They gave up this farm and moved down on the river flats, the S.W.20-63-9-W4th. In July 1944 Mr. and Mrs. Catudal's third child, Clair, drowned while swimming in the river. Mr. and Mrs. Catudal had twelve children; Paul, Bertha (Mrs. Hankel), Clair, Alphonse, Janet (who died when she was only six months old), Ernest, Rita, Roger, Alice, Marguerite, Germaine and Yvonne. In 1956 Mr. and Mrs. Catudal and family moved to Bowness (Calgary). In the sping of 1965, they returned to Mallaig. Mr. Catudal passed away in 1977."
From Harvest of Memories, by the Goodridge Social and Agricultural Society, 1999
"Marie Cecile Robidoux was born on March 16, 1907. Magloire Joseph Catudal was born April 24, 1903. Marie Cecile Robidoux married Magloire Catudal of Sherbrooke, Quebec, in 1924. In 1927, along with another couple, they drove from Sherbrooke, Quebec to Alberta and stayed at Joe Bosse's place where Paul, the oldest, was born. Joe Bosse was Magloire's maternal uncle.
Later, they moved onto their own homestead and farmed near the Beaver River. Magloire was better known as St. John around Goodridge. All the children attended White Rat School except the youngest, Yvonne, who only went once when she was close to school age. Her mother was in the hospital, and Roger, Alice, Marguerite, and Germaine brought her with them rather than miss school.
Marie Cecile and Magloire lived on their farm overlooking the Beaver River until 1955 when they had an auction sale and moved, along with their five younger children, to Bowness, near Calgary. Marie Cecile and Magloire had twelve children in all. They are: Paul b. Aug 25, 1927, Bertha b. Feb 13, 1929, Claire Ida b. 1930, Alphonse b. Jul 15, 1933, Janette b. Nov 7, 1935, Rita b. Nov 22, 1939, Roger b. Jan 18, 1942, Marguerite b. Jul 4, 1945, Germaine b. May 21, 1947, Yvonne b. Apr 30, 1949. (Condensed listing - further detail provided in actual text)
Magloire and Cecile returned to Mallaig and spent part of their retirement years living there. Marie Cecile (Robidoux) Catudal died in 1991. Magloire Joseph Catudal died in 1977. Both are buried in St. Paul."
Also from the Harvest of Memories - The story of Lawrence and Bertha Hagen mentions Clara drowning.
"With all the happy memories one very sad one remains; when Clara Catudal drowned. We had been there that Sunday picking saskatoons with Bert and Paul. Their mother was in St. Paul hospital, for one of the children, and Mr. Catudal had gone to see her. I had taken a lunch for everyone's dinner, then after all our containers were full of berries, we jumped in the river for a cool swim before going home. The water was swift there and the many large rocks on the bottom made it hard to wade in, because you tripped on them. Lawrence was a very good swimmer so we took our two girls (then about three and five) in. They stayed in the shallow water. Paul came in but none of the small fry did. We would have watched them. After we left though, Clara went in and must have tripped and fallen, unable to get back up with the force of the current. Paul almost drowned himself trying to save her as he didn't swim. When we heard what had happened we felt terrible and partly responsible. If only she had gone in when we were there to watch out for her. It must have been a terrible thing for the mother, away in the hospital. She was unable to come to the funeral.
Mrs. Catudal was a very good neighbour to me when I first came to the area. That very first summer she would bring a small girl to babysit, while she showed me where the muskeg or hair cranberries were. I'd never seen them before. The raspberries were in the coulees near their place. She always offered to keep my baby if I was picking saskatoons near there. Again, she showed us where the saskatoons were good. One time when rationing was on, she brought me a most precious gift, a pound of tea. I had just come home with a new baby I was nursing. When I opened the wrap and saw that tea, I jumped with joy. It was just what I needed. I disliked the coffee which Lawrence drank most of the time. The ration coupons couldn't cover both. What a blessing that tea was when I needed liquid and a pick-me-up."2,3 Magloire died on 26 January 1977 at St. Paul, Alberta, Canada, at age 73. His body was interred on 29 January 1977 at St. Paul, Alberta, Canada.
