Enumeration of the BC Penitentiary Inmates in the 1901 Census

There are three ways that I can recommend to look up names of the men who were incarcerated in the BC Penitentiary in 1901.

You can to the "Library and Archives Canada" website, and search the three pages of names, as written by the enumerator.

This link will take you to the main page of the 1901 Census http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/020122_e.html

  1. Click on "Search the Database"
  2. 2.
  3. Check the box for "British Columbia"
  4. 3.
  5. Change the "Number of references per page" to "Max"
  6. 4.
  7. Click on "Submit Query"
  8. 5.
  9. Scroll down to: 91

Once you are in this area, click on the drop-down arrow in the "Associated images" box. The pages you will want to view are:

Pages: 4 - 6 inclusive

Instructions for installing the MrSid viewer are easy to follow, and will be right there when you call for a page number.

OR, you can access Automated Genealogy's index to the 1901 Census of Canada here http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

  1. Click on 1901 in the upper right hand corner of the page
  2. Click on "British Columbia" under the heading of "Provincial Summaries"
  3. Click on "New Westminster" under the heading of "District Summaries for BRITISH COLUMBIA"
  4. Scroll to "New Westminster (City/Cite) d-6" and click on the "d-6"
  5. Click on Pages 4, 5, and 6 and you'll be able to view the index of names.

Alternatively, you can enter the name in the search field at the site, hoping that it was easily recognized and transcribe-able… Unless you are actively engaged in transcribing, it is hard to appreciate the lengths one must go to figure out some enumerators writing patterns, and if the name was spelled in a manner in which you know it today.

OR, you can order the census film by inter-library loan through your local library. Library and Archives Canada Film #: T-6429
