REPORTS ON EVENTS FROM THE 2004 SEASON
MAY 15 - Penticton DUEL IN THE DESERT
Doodoo in the Desert!!!! It all started on the road over...you see Chris W.-who went on to be THIRD in the Men's OC-1 race-forgot his lunch and so because Pep and Lynda were to shadow the trailer, which Chris was towing, had a huge lunch all we could do was pull up next to him every now and then and eat so he could see us drinking smoothies and eating big sandwiches and chips and fruit and cheese and the whole deal///finally Chris got us to stop and then 'cause it was a meager rest stop all he get was a jug of apple juice to drink!! Good old BC and the fruit stands,eh??? So we end up in the Okanagan, Chris famished and the boats all in one piece. After nap time we went out and psyched out the course and every one began to arrive at THE HOTEL!!!! Man!!! The place would give a good name to the Bates Motel (remember. PSYCHO?). Hamilton was just checking out and Elise our "Hostess" was still slightly sober and the rooms were soon to be painted, and the blankets were stained and well you get the picture. At least they accepted dogs, and Jaques ( who was crew captain in the SECOND OC-6, in the race!!!!!). Sarah and Claire staggered in at 3:00 in the morning, having gone drinking with Hamilton apparently. Claire(who WON the womens OC-1 RACE) claimed she woke up with her face stuck to the kitchen floor and Sarah(who was THIRD in the Woman's OC-1 race) had to pry her loose with a couple feeble kicks to the side of her head. Note to all paddlers,,,if you pass out try to do it on carpet or the bed or as Karen P says "hit that little patch of grass nest to the cement walk". The day of the race Lynda, Pep and Chris were up and rolling...down to the boats and on with rigging BUT they were so early everyone missed the usual last minute fist fights and panic...The crews showed up rigged, polished and it was all easy...The race was 12:30 and everyone hoped for wind or not and everyone got their wish... Not the Skaha sidewind anticipated but intermittant and all good. Greg R. as the coach/captain/confessor for the B boat led us in silent meditation and then grabbed PEP by the throat and said"NO phuPhu!!!...FOLLOW THE FAST BOAT ...JUST FOLLOW THE FAST BOAT!!!!" Pep, with eyes like saucers and a neck like a Bantu woman was in the boat and muttering over and over the mantra from the Coach...like something out of the Wizard of Oz...."follow the yellow fast boat...follow the yellow fast boat..." Then the race started. After wandering around within the pack, turning back twice and even trying to get everyone to stop, Greg finally yelled out "PEP you twit WE are the fastest boat!!! Just steer" And so we were and so Pep did. Off the start line two boat lengths and by the first buoy....six and at the turn around a million and then Chris started yelling "I'm still hunry I'm still hungry" But no one cared and nothing to care about and the B boat ripped and tore across that lake driving ducks and perch and tadpoles before us until we hit the final turn and if it could get better it did for right behind us was the other Calgary Boat and so right to the line; 1 and 2 Calgary!!!! What a day and what a finish except for Chris W who was comatose at that point. Congrats to BOTH boats for first and second in the 16 boat field. People just HATE Calgary at this point.. But it got worse the next day...Small boat competition and lots of top spot finishes. Lynda and Pep barely squeaked in with a FIRST in the Mixed OC-2 Race and Jacques and Chris were in inches of each other at the finish( THIRD and FOURTH) and out of the mist came Barney behind them(FIFTH)...Then Two Calgary women in the TOP THREE for the OC-1 Race and it was alot of hardware for Calgary, eh???  The drive back would have been sweet except for the fact Tim Hortons was closed and Lynda gave the finger to a guy on Crowchild and it almost ended up in a drive by...The boats were offloaded 12:00AM at the club and Chris W was never far from their side the whole trip and so let's give it up for boat boy!!! It is alot of work and worry and the kid raced well too!!!!! Come around the Club to see the Trophy, if we can ever get it out of Pep's car....----- Original Message -----

MAY 29 - JERICO IRON
CALGARY WINS ANOTHER MIXED RACE

Put this race on your calander for next year, they have a great site, superb food (Barry's B-Q) and a great party.  This trip went like clock work with all members arriving just as the boat was being rigger. A quick shake down paddle and we are ready. The rain came big time during the night but let up enough to not be a factor for the race, nice to have warm rain. The water was sloppy with brisk winds pushing us out to the turn around. We had a great start and found ourselves leading to the mark (but not that sure where the mark was) after the turn around we had to struggle into quatering waves, we need to paddle in these conditions more. steering and paddling was tough but the Jerico crew could not make any gains. We crossed the line to earn our first CORA CUP points. A good job by our inexperienced crew Larua and Tamara had never paddled OC-6 in the ocean so good job girls.
Sunday was small boats and full marks to Karen and Tamara for racing the OC-1's, they got to ride some good surf on the run home, great experience. Mike and myself did the Men's OC-1 race, results show Calgary can paddle with anyone. We need to race more so lets try to get teams out to more of these events, it will make a big difference as we gain experience.

TEAM "DOM and HYC" was made up of - Don D. , Mike L., John R, Laura Baker, Tamara, Karen Phillips
VICTORIA JUNE 12 -
THE LOTUS IRON JUNE 29 OR "THE QUEST FOR MEAT"

It seems after the Victoria Iron we decimated our male paddlers and so it was decided that if the Lotus Iron was to be, the CLub would have to turn to the next, or last best thing(s): Bill H. Jon A.  and Mike L. Lynda R. with the look of one resolved to her fate and prepared to make do with the cards dealt, brought herself up to her full height and declared:

"AND SO IT SHALL BE LOTUS AND SO WE SHALL GO AND WE SHALL BE MIXED, THREE OF EACH KIND SHALL BOARD THE BOAT AND WE SHALL PADDLE AND WE SHALL CALL OURSELVES MIXED  AND BEYOND THAT WE SHALL CALL OUSELVES THE MIGHT HOE VA'A KA MAUNA POHAKU NUI  AND WE SHALL GO FORTH AND ALL BUT THE PRINCESS SHALL DRIVE"

and the cars were loaded and there were only the three above plus Lynda and her side kick Jess and the princess, who was to fly. So it began...except once over the BC border Jess looked behind the car and said "hey, were we supposed to bring a boat?" Now too late to turn back and too inspired by Lynda's words to abandon the plan, we simply drove on...many ideas were hatched...maybe to use John Roberts name and secure a brand new boat in Abbotsford? Maybe to tie the two OC-2s together and add a cushion and paddle them as a six?...But finally we simply asked "W.W.J.D.?"-What Would Jacques DO? So we stopped and had ice cream and forgot about it...Turns out we were coverd.Lotus in its' incredible hospitality said not only do we have a boat but real men!!! Would you like to leave yours on the shore and take ours? Lynda placed hand upon jaw but her decision was made for her as she succumbed to Jon A. pathetic little girl howls and said, "Naw, We keeps 'em" And so the race began...after the womens, the mens and some sand castle competition Bill organized...ah but before talk of the race...what of Mike Ls. pre-race nutritional preparation? The Princess had arrived the night before and after her foot massage by Jess, she announced "This is my natural habitat and I shall lead you to food!" After the leading we found ourselves at a table... odd concoctions were delivered and Lynda sat in horror as Mike L. leapt into his third helping of nut loaf with natural yeast powder and flactulated almond paste...bellowing in an ecstasy of vegan gastronomic joy he yelled " Where is my organic kale? What about my tofu cutlets? Where is the Glutonous brown rice?" While the rest of us had to settle for what simple fare we could decipher, Mike seemed the proverbial hog in that quaint saying about heaven. His car covered with hippie political stickers and his stomach full of craven organic grule Mike slept the sweet sleep of the carbo loaded and and the princess and Pep shuddered in the realization: MIKE HAD GONE VANCOUVER!!!!! And then the race began....In fact the race went well except for the start when no one remembered to tell the boat to go and Bill dropped his tea he was sharing with elders in the boat next to ours...and the light ama which drove Jon to distractions and the heat, the God awful, unrelenting heat and the small splashing sounds of fish leaping about and the princes forgetting to take off her one white glove before the race and the heavy steady pull executed by the crew when after the first two K the competition had burned out but it was a race and even with the excuse of being out front no one quit racing and Calgary comes in first!!!!! OC-6 Mixed Division. A tradition is being upheld as no Calgary boat this year in the category has not won in the races we have done. Hello Gibsons!!!!???!!!

So celebration and joy Jon A frolics shamelessly after these races and Bill H begins sanppin' pictures and Jess grins like a happy elf and Lynda quits eyeing the coould have been Lotus men and Mike L says" Whoa! Hey dudes and dudettes, way to go" And the princess regally gazes down upon the little ones in their simple joy. BUT that was the first day.Just as the mayhem and odds and ends are getting sorted and people are at peace with each and the other...Greasy shows up- Chris W. blows into town and says "Oh me? Here? I got chicks everywhere and so I a, just droppin' in for a spin!" But instead he decided to join us for dinner, and a race. On the way back to Sarah K- AKA the Princess- natural habitat Mike suddenly went Calgary on us...Vancouver didn't take and it was clear that the mere mention of nut loaf could put ones life in danger...so began the "Quest for Meat!!!!" Down come the Marxist-Leninist stickers and the next thing we know we are all led to the Pampered Pig Pit...Mike is back! Mike is Back!!!!!! And so porcine fuled the next day the team virtually whipped the water to shreds. Lynda said "we didn't come all this way to not go home with every door prize, trophy or bit of food we can steal!!! Get out there and race and if you can't race forage!!!! Those that raced raced well...FIRST PLACE OC-2 MIXED AND WOMEN, CALGARY, FIRST PLACE OC-2 MENS, CALGARY THIRD PLACE OC-1, CALGARY...so after the awards and the chanting of "We're number one! We're number one" Lotus took us all aside and thanked us for coming and said NEVER NEVER come back again. Now if that is not the sign of having had a good time, what is?

PADDLE TILL YOU DROP - SEPT 11 - 12

The weather was good as always, one of these years we will pay the price but so far we have been lucky. This years races went well, the fleet of 10 C-lions means less heats so we got all the events off in record time.
