Welcome to Bell Beef. This is our family’s way of adding value to the foods we produce on our farm. We like selling directly to our customers because we enjoy having contact with the people who use our beef.
We run a mixed farm northwest of Drumheller, part way between Drumheller and Three Hills. Our farm produces mainly grains, oil-seeds and forages, with beef being an offshoot of forage production. Our cattle herd is quite small, producing 35 - 40 calves in a year. Because we are a family operation, having cattle allows our children a chance to be involved with and have first hand experience feeding and caring for animals.
Our farm is located about 12 miles northwest of
Drumheller in the farming
community of Orkney. Most of the year our
Angus/Blonde cross cattle graze on
native prairie pastures in the coulees by Three Hills Creek and on the tame
pasture nearby. Throughout the winter they are fed a combination of barley, peas
and hay with supplementary vitamins and minerals as required. We don’t use any
growth hormones (implants). Also, our animals are not fed antibiotics or animal
by-products.
Because we don’t use growth enhancing hormones, our beef has a slower growth
rate and takes longer to get ready for market. Ours is a small beef herd, raised
in a low stress environment - we ensure plenty of food, water and sheltered
bedding areas. In order to keep the stress level as low as possible we haul the
cattle only a short distance, directly to a government approved slaughter plant
with good facilities.
There are many theories as to what produces tender, well-flavoured beef. We
believe the low stress environment and slower growth rate is what has led to
the enthusiastic comments from past customers (and why they have recommended our
beef to their friends).
Our beef is available from about mid-June to mid-October.
* Orders need to be placed early as quantities are limited.

The price is based on pick up at Riverside Packers in Rosedale (just east of Drumheller) or our farm (just northwest of Drumheller). We can arrange to deliver at no charge within 10 miles of Rosedale or at a charge to recover costs outside of that area.

"Our family enjoys Bell beef because it is so tender. I am told that this is because the Bell cows lead stress free lives. I have been to the Bell farm and it is very peaceful there, so I expect this is true. A few years ago, our children barbequed steaks (from the Bell farm) for Father’s Day. They cooked them thoroughly. In fact they cooked them until they were black. We were amazed that the steaks were still tender on the inside.”
