Goats Canucks Goats (Sierra Leone)

So a group of guys from the lower mainland who are big hockey fans decided to get creative about supporting their hockey team and do some good in the world at the same time. They created "Goats Canucks Goat," a campaign to buy goats for Sierra Leone for every Vancouver Canuck win in the 2009 playoffs. The following article about their campaign made it in the Vancouver Sun: (click if you want to go to the Vancouver Sun)

"With the Vancouver Canucks set to make a deep run into the play offs, we are looking for something that will help drum up support in areas of the world where they play hockey with one piece sticks that are literally just sticks... and use empty turtle shells as pucks. Well... probably. Anyways, since it is tradition that during the play offs we grow a play off beard or a goatee, the goal is to buy a goat for a family living in poverty for every Canucks win. That's 4 goats per round x 4 rounds = 16 goats. Each goat is $25 for a total of $400. A small price to pay for winning the Cup. The more people that get in on this, the cheaper it will be. Also, if Vancovuer wins the cup we are buying a village an elephant. If you don't have money, or facial hair, that's okay. Then just join the group for fun and support. James Wasmuth has volunteered to buy the first goat. Way to go James. We are still looking for a good name for this initiative. Some suggestions so far are: Facial hair because we care, Hairy goats, Beards for a cause."

So I'm putting the challenge to the congregation, especially the Cannuck fans: If you think so highly of your hockey team, and believe that they'll do well in the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs, why not commit to buying goats for every win. You can join the Facebook Group or you can go directly to the CRWRC website to buy your goats. Because of my love of Sierra Leone I will officially declare that I will cheer for the Cannucks in the playoffs (and you know how big a pill that is for an Oilers fan to swallow).
