The Poetry of Daniel Harrison

Winning By Default

Take your rock and roll, but leave my jazz intact
And wrap me in a blanket by the sea
Please don’t breathe a word about my new address
Tell ‘em that I’ve quit the company

Toss the daily news out with my morning mail
And snap that TV off before you leave
Catch the red-eye back to what you call a home
Then find another sucker if you please

I’m leaking time like water in an ozone dream
A month of Sundays pooling at my feet
Waiting out the rain inside my concrete nest
Before I take my chances in the street

Take your heavy toll, but give my conscience back
And spare me from those planet-shrinking schemes
Let the leaders wallow in their self-made mess
Tell ‘em that they shouldn’t count on me

Blow your daily fuse and fill your bullshit pail
With manufactured news from NBC
Call your broker barking on the telephone
Another truckload wafting in the breeze

I speak in rhymes and hide inside a silent scream
And dream of mud sharks schooling in the deep
Just this side of sane, I guess I do my best
Today I cast a ballot with my feet
