The winery
Located around the wine-village Fels am Wagram (situatet in the eastern part of Austria) there are 10 ha wineyards, from which the Czerny-family produces around 100.000 bottles a year.
The name of the winery changed through the generations some times (to see on the old wooden winepress of 1848 and the old farmdoor of 1913), but it was always the same family. From the name Wimmer it changed in the 1960s to Czerny because of marriage. Since 1985 Hans Czerny jun. reached toprankings in many wineguides. In 2003, Wimmer-Czerny Felser Berg GrünerVeltliner 2002 was chosen as the Top White Wine in Western Canada at the 2003 Western Canada Wine Awards held in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.
There are 7 family members covering 3 generations. To give health nature again further to next generations, Wimmer-Czerny uses a production system as close to nature as possible removing problematic processe, herbicides and pesticides. Wimmer-Czerny produces "BIO“ – organic wine. The Austrian government strictly controls this method of production.
The wine-region
the terroir was formed by the danube-river
The name Wagram comes from the geological fact, that this sandy "Loess"hill goes along the waters of Danube-river for ca 20 km from West to East, so the slope has south-exposure.
Fels am Wagram - close to the maintown vienna
Situated in the east of Austria you could see on a map the river danube making a line between Linz and Vienna, on half way there is the beautiful town of Krems .The Weingut Wimmer-Czerny is 20 km east of Krems and 70 km west of Vienna.
Grüner Veltliner is the top-wine
Mainvariety of grapes are Grüner Veltliner (50%), Riesling (15%), Weißburgunder (10%) and Zweigelt (15%) - its 3/4 of the winery. Also grows here Sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay, the old Localspecies are Malvasier, Roter Veltliner and Traminer , to continue the tradition.
Old wineyards give better wines, we have such between 20 and 35 years. Tats the reason, that we dont use irrigationsystemss to get more concentrated wines because of deep roots in deep soils, low yealds between 1.000 and 5.000 l/ha.
In the last years we changed our wineyardsystems to high leafwalls, more plants per ha, not so much brunches, more sun to the grapes. So we can work more natural without problematic processes.
Less manipulations - more Character
All Wimmer-Czerny wines are produced without adding sugar or acidity, because only in the wineyards you can make high quality, in the cellar you can only try to bring it into the bottle. Every year we dont sell 10 - 15 % of the harvest as qualitywine, because only the best should have our label.
Much fruit, fresh and big body, more caracters, every wine an individuum, thats the way, we want to have our wines. Long life in the bottle, after the first year not at the end of riping, good potential for aging, thats the things our winelovers are telling us.
The principle of the winemaker Ing.Hans Czerny jun.is to lead as much to nature as possible.
