It is estimated that the Acadians numbered 18,000 people and held the best lands in Nova Scotia. The English considered this a great impediment to colonization as they refused to pledge allegiance to King nor Church.

(III)-Louis Joseph Gauthier de Varennes wrote to Maurepas that "here (New France), more than elseware, envy remains a passion much in fashion, from which it is not possible to protect oneself." Exploration accomplishments are not recognized by France or New France. This is in response to the lack of recognition of (II)-Pierre Gauthier de Varennes et de La Verendrye (1685-1749) and sons' activities in the West. It is noteworthy that the Metis and Coureurs des Bois preceded the Verendryes in their numbers.
Halifax, Nova Scotia is described by George Hick, a blacksmith, as a place where man can live as man can desire, wanting for no money, or cloths, no victuals nor drink nor lodging, well fortified with batteries and cannon. French Acadians were not allowed to build boats, sell their lands or belongings nor to farm new lands.
(V)-Marie Mius, Metis, b-1750, daughter (IV)-Jean Baptiste Mius, Metis, b-1713 Cap de Sable, Acadia and Marie Jusephte Surette, b-1719, died 1760, Massachusetts; married 1772 Charles LeBlanc son Pierre LeBlanc and Marguerite Amirault
(I)-Robert Le Roy is at Quebec this year
Fort Edward, Windsor, Nova Scotia is built this year.
Marquis de la Galissonierre noted that only Canada is truly capable of thwarting British expansion in the new world.
The illegitimate (enfant du Roi) births recorded in Quebec from 1741 to 1750 numbered 312.
Three hundred German settlers arrived at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
The population in Acadia exceeded 10,000.
J.C.B. in the Great Lakes wrote: The inhabitants of Montreal are much more lively, active, courageous, passionate, enterprising and warlike than those of Quebec; They pretend to be invincible, which has not always kept them from being surprised by the Iroquois. However, they are good warriors, used to the ways of the Natives and they are hard to beat. They are good voyagers, who manage their canoe well, always singing, and they are also good hunters. They are not very rich, because they spend all that they gained in the past year or more, during the yearly trading trips they undertake with the merchants to visit the Natives in the northern regions.
When the ships have for the last time weighed their anchors in England, the real misery begins with the long voyage. For from there the ships, unless they have good wind, must often sail eight, nine, ten or twelve weeks before they reach Philadelphia....But during the voyage there is on board these ships terrible misery, stench, fumes, horror, vomiting, many kinds of seasickness, fever, headache, heat, boils, constipation, scurvy, cancer, mouth rot, and the like, all of which come from old and sharply-salted food and meat, also from very bad and foul water, so that many die miserably....Few women who give birth to children on the ship escape with their lives and many a mother is cast into the water with her child as soon as she is dead. Children from one to seven years rarely survive the voyage; and many a time parents are compelled to see their children miserably suffer and die from hunger, thirst, and sickness and then see them cast into the water. I saw such misery in no less than thirty-two children in our ship, all of whom were thrown into the sea....When the ships have landed at Philadelphia after their long voyage, no one is permitted to leave them except those who pay for their passage. The others, who cannot pay, must remain on board the ships till they are purchased and are released from the ships by their purchasers. The sick
always fare the worst, for the healthy are always preferred and purchased first; and so the sick and wretched must often remain on board in front of the city for two or three weeks, and frequently die....The sale of human beings in the market on board the ship is carried on thus: Every day people come from the city of Philadelphia and other places and go on board the newly-arrived ship that has brought and offers passengers for sale....When they come to an agreement, adult persons usually bind themselves in writing to serve from 3-6 years according to their age and strength. But very young people, from ten to fifteen years, must serve till they are twenty-one years old.
Many parents must sell and trade away their children like so many head of cattle, for if their children take the debt upon themselves, the parents can leave the ship free and unrestrained but as the parents often do not know where and to what people their children are going it often happens
that such parents and children, after leaving the ship, do not see each other again for many years, perhaps no more in all their lives.

Fort Beausejour is built during the 1751-1755 period by the French on the west bank of the Misaguash River
Construction began on Fort Beausejour (Sackville, New Brunswick) on the west bank of the Missaguash River, near Aulac-Sackville, New Brunswick, by the French, as an off set to the British Fort Lawrence (near Amhurst, Nova Scotia). It is estimated that the Acadians numbered 18,000 people and held the best lands in Nova Scotia. The English considered this a great impediment to colonization as they refused to pledge allegiance to King nor Church. Others contend the Fort was in poor condition by June 1755 when attacked.

Louis Franquet, a military engineer, was horrified to find the sisters as educators. He wrote that their usefulness would seem to be demonstrated, but the evil that results from them is like a slow-acting poison that depopulates the countryside, since an educated girl is a gentlewoman; she is finicky, she wants to settle in the town, she requires a merchant for a husband, and she looks down upon the state in which she was born as beneath her. His report curtailed the work of the sisters.

The British began building a fort at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). The French captured it in April 1754.
German, Swiss and French Protestants settled at Lunenburg, Acadia (Nova Scotia).
A French officer named Franquet, having traveled between Quebec and
Montreal, wrote: I stopped at Madame Lamothe's at La Chenaye.
Judging by
the furnishings of that house, one would have to say that the country folk
are too well off. The education by the Grey Nuns, the young girls
receive, is like a slow poison that tends to depopulate the countryside.
The girls wish to be ladies, they become affected in their manner. They
want to live in town, they will marry no one but a merchant, and look down
on the condition in which they are born. The Grey Nun's objective
is to turn out Christian ladies. The French Canadians, however, are
proud of their cultured ladies. One of the first questions put to
a stranger is, if they are married, how they like the country ladies and
whether they will take one home with him.

The New York Mercury newspaper reported that Lake Erie is under French control and that they plan to attack Albany. They went on to say, unless stopped, France will subject the whole continent to the French yoke. Six months into the British-French War, it was grim for the British, as the French scored a series of victories in the backwoods of Virginia through New England. This American English and French War of 1754-1760 took more lives than the American War of Independence. It conceded with the Great Seven Year World War of 1756-1763, between England and France.
It is noteworthy how the British diverted blame from the French to the Indians during the British-French War. Governor Robert Dinwiddle of Virginia wrote: Think you see the infant torn from unavailing struggles of the distracted mother, the daughters ravished before the eyes of their wretched parents; and then, with cruelty and insult, butchered and scalped. Suppose the horrid scene complicated, and the whole family, man wife and children (as they were), murdered and scalped...and then torn in pieces, and in part devoured by wild beasts, for whom they left a prey by their more brutal enemies. It is no wonder that the Americans felt animosity towards the Indians for the next three hundred years.
