1764
(I)-Lawrence Laurenz Edward Ermatinger
(1736/43-1789) born Switzerland of Swiss-German-English ancestry, son Lawrence
Ermatinger and Anne Maria (Buhl); the first of
a long line of independent fur traders first noted in 1764 travel permit to the
west and again in 1774, was recorded in Montreal 1770 or earlier and was involved in the
fur trade (1762-1775) but spent no time in the field; returned to England and
married 1764 London, Jemima Oakes d-1807 sister of his trading partner
(I)-Joseph Forrest Oakes (1734-1783), then
returned to Montreal. [(I)-Lawrence Edward Ermatinger (1736-1789), was in partnership in 1767 with (I)-Richard Dobie (1731-1805),
Pierre Montbrun, and
Benjamin Frobisher this year and during this decade. They also traded out of Green Bay and Michilimackinac
during this period. Green Bay is re-occupied by the English under the command
of Howard.] The children were all born Montreal but some sent to
England for education.
(II)-Jemima Ermatinger (1765-1840) remained single
(II)-Anna Maria (Margaret) Ermatinger (1766-1836), married
George Garrett, no kids recorded

and Chaterine McKee

Indian or Metis, other say an Italian?
(III)-Charles Oakes Ermatinger Sr.
Metis (1776-1833), married Sault
Ste Marie, Charlotte Mananowe Katawabi (Kalawabide) Dai Ojibwa, d-1880, Some
claim he maybe the son (I)-Lawrence but in 1850 the Ojibwa chiefs identified
Charles as an Ojibwa half breed and entitled to land but this could be a result
of being adopted into the culture and because he married a Ojibwa girl.
Most believe he is the son (II)-Lawrence?

(I)-Lawrence Ermatinger
(1736/43-1789) was involved in trading anything, furs, hardware, clothing,
tobacco, gunpowder and a female slave which he said with no acquaintances to
ruin her, but he paid $130 for her and sold her for $100.00. Lawrence was
always on the brink of bankruptcy in 1770, 1783 and he went bankrupt upon his
death in 1789. Jemima his wife conducted the business when he went on
business to London. Some challenged these business dealings because under
English Law "A man cannot grant anything to his wife, for the grant would
be to support her a separate existence." The couple were under
English Law because they married in London. The famous jurist, William
Blackstone, writing on the "rights of persons" and the "rights of
things" under English law, argued that husband and wife were one person in
law: "A woman indeed may be attorney for her husband; for that implies no separation
from, but rather a repetition of her lord." Thus Lawrence could
legally make his wife his attorney.

It is impossible to deny that slavery existed in New France (Quebec) before and after the transfer of Canada to the English. The slave trade included Panis (Indian) and Negro (African) and remained a slave even if converted to Roman Catholic or even if they fought for France during war.
Some exiled Canadian Acadians who returned to Nova Scotia before this time were once again deported or thrown into prison camps. Permission is given for some of the displaced Acadians to return to Nova Scotia. In subsequent years, about 3,000 Acadians would return, but are not allowed to reclaim their farms as they are all occupied by 12,500 English-speaking squatters. Many settled around Baie Sainte Marie and Cheticamp, as well as Ile Madame on Cape Breton Island. Many are forced to settle on the east coast of New Brunswick, as this is considered the best available land. Many family units had been broken up and were never reunited. About 2,500 Acadians settled in Louisiana this year. Sixteen hundred Acadians exiled to Britain and, living in internment camps, would also join the Louisiana colony. About one quarter of these prisoners of war would die of smallpox during their first year of captivity.
(I)-James Murray (1721-1794) was the first Colonial Governor General of the Province of Quebec from August 10, 1764 to June 28, 1766. He was the Military Governor of the District of Quebec (1760-1764). (I)-James Murry was recalled to Britain because he believed that if the Canadians were to live contentedly in a British colony, they must be allowed to continue their customs and laws, to worship as Roman Catholics, and to speak French.
The newspaper, Chronicle-Telegraph, is started in Quebec, Quebec.
The Acadians were finally allowed to return to Nova Scotia in 1764. However, the fertile lands that once were theirs were now occupied by English settlers. Since the British would not allow the Acadians to form large settlements, they gradually settled along the various remote coastal regions of the province such as Baie Ste-Marie.

Quarrels arose between the Beothuk and the Micmac who arrived Newfoundland earlier this century. The Beothuk peacefully traded with the Naskapi (Quebec Montagnais). It's noteworthy the British considered the Beothuk fair game, drove them from their coastal lands and killed them on sight. The French were no better by placing a bounty on their heads. The barbaric English and French would hunt them to extinction by 1829. The Beothuk were well established before 1000 B.C. in Newfoundland and linguistically unique in America. French were still present in Newfoundland, much to the disgust of the English residents at this time. France had acknowledged British sovereignty in 1714, but she kept the exclusive use of long stretches of coast for her fisheries until 1904

June 24: The Quebec Act received Royal assent to become effective on May 1, 1775. The Act enlarged the boundary of Quebec, over the Royal proclamation of 1763, to include Labrador, Ile d'Anticosti and Iies de la Madeline on the east and the Indian territory south of the Great Lakes, between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers in the West. An elected assembly was not included, but religious freedom was guaranteed for the Roman Catholics. The Act maintained French civil law, added British criminal law and provided for continued use of the seigniorial system. The Americans were enraged, especially concerning the Indian territory, and considered it as the Intolerable Act or the Quebec Bill.
