Welcome to the Game Playing Page!

The whole point to the Game Playing Page (GPP) is to be a convenient place for our long distance gaming sessions. It incorporates an optional chat window; links to useful pages, files, and information; windows for images of game characters; and other toys.

URL

(I’m an “L”???)

The URL (Universal Resource Locator) is the address for the web page. The URL for the Game Playing Page will eventually be http://members.fortunecity.com/darrellwpenner/verdengamepage/verdengamepage.html (it is planned that way, I’ll update things as they change). For now it resides in the CB folder on your hard drive wherever you unzipped it to. =)  Probably this is silly information since you have likely gotten to this page from there. On the other hand you may have saved this page for reference.

Beginnings

This is what you should see if you are first arriving to the GPP using Netscape. It should appear similarly if you are using Internet Explorer or other comparable browsers. I’m afraid that the GPP is very dependent on “frames”. If you are seeing the page as above, no problem… if not, find a fairly current version of Netscape or Internet Explorer. They’re readily available and free. In a pinch, you can use Microsoft Word as a browser and it will handle frames.

Welcome Window

In the centre you will see a copy of the player’s map for the Verden Campaign. It is a little worn, but the original is over 200 game years old and is from an old survey of the Threa Empire to the south. Clicking on the player map should open up a window with a larger version of the map. (suitable for framing) (if you can find a really, really neat printer)

On this page is also a link to open the Chat Window. Clicking this link will replace the Welcome screen with the Chat Window described later.

Left and Right Menu Windows

These are the main control areas for the GPP. The tables with the “Menu” links will bring up menus in the corresponding frames at the top and bottom of the page. These menus will allow you to select a character’s image for that pane. The Player Image link will bring up a menu for the top centre pane where you can select your character’s image. More about selecting these images later.

Left Menu

On the Left Menu towards the bottom are a number of links dealing with the Chat Window. “Open Chat Window!” will open a chat window in the central pane of the GPP. “Open Chat in New Window!” will open this Chat Window in it’s own page independent of the GPP. More about opening the Chat Windows in “Instructions for Using the Chat Window”. “How to use the Chat Window” will also take you to that page opening it up in the Notes Pane. This is an un-illustrated version of the page. “A Quick Guide to IRC” will open a page about using IRC for playing the game. More about using IRC in “Quick Guide to Using IRC for Gaming in Verden”. “A Quick Guide to IRC” will also take you to that page opening it up in the Notes Pane. This also is an un-illustrated version of the page.

Right Menu

On the Right Menu towards the middle are a number of miscellaneous links. Many of these links will open up information files in the Notes Pane in the middle of the bottom row of the GPP. “Misc Pages” will open up windows with useful information.

Notes Pane Menu

Initial Page” will reload the initial information page to the Notes Pane. “What this page is about!” will open a file in the Notes Pane describing the purpose of the GPP. The “Links” link will bring a list of useful page links to the Notes Pane. “How to Change the Images” will bring up relatively detailed instructions on how to change the images on the GPP. “Information for tonight’s Game” will open a file with information specific to the night’s game if there is any. Likely it might just have the information for the previous gaming session.

Misc Pages

Arctic Journal” will bring up a new window with the Journal of the Arctic Campaign of the Verden Game. “Golden Cloth Campaign Journal” will bring up a new window with a Journal of the Golden Cloth Campaign. “Atlas” will bring up the start page for the Verden World Atlas that I hope to have available soon. “Character Bios” and “Who’s Who” will bring up index pages leading to information on NPC and PC characters.

Notes Pane

The Notes Pane will be where various pages of information will appear triggered by activating links in the other menus.

Image Panes

The 13 image panes initially have some artwork I have done. If you click on the image, or on a corresponding “Menu” link in the Left and Right Menus you will be presented with a men with character names listed. Select one of these and the pane will contain an image of that character. The numbered links at the bottom of the list will bring up one of the starting images. The Centre Top Pane is reserved for your own Character Image. The image below shows the GPP where some Character Images have been selected. The Notes Pane has the instructions for changing the images. The third pane in the top row has the menu for changing characters displayed. For now I have the images colour coded with the frame and text for the image reflecting the kind of character. (The colour for the frame doesn’t seem to change with Internet Explore, but the text colour still does) Tentatively “Gold” reflects the Player Characters and the NPC Bob. “Maroon” is being used for Non Player Characters. “Green” is being used for GM Characters. (i.e. Gnorman) GM Characters might have nothing to do with the game at all.
