1,200 km Canadian Great Divide Trail hike
(benefited the charity Child Haven International)
In the summer of 2006, Paula Duncan took her support of Child Haven International* many steps farther, by solo-hiking 1200km of the Great Divide Trail from the Canada-USA border at Waterton (in Alberta), to Kakwa Lake Provincial Park (in British Columbia).
Paula was the first female to complete the hike, solo.

How the Project Came About:
I’ve helped plan and stage various events for Child Haven over the past nine years, particularly the annual Calgary dinner. In 2005 I ran the Calgary Burnco marathon with other members of the Calgary CH support group; long distance hiking being one of my passions, the Great Divide Trail (GDT) seemed the perfect next project for me, a marathon of a different sort.
Why Child Haven International?
I am enthusiastic about supporting Child Haven for numerous reasons. To summarize a few: Child Haven respects the religious and cultural heritage of people it assists. Self sufficiency is promoted; persons are given skills and opportunity to fulfill their potential both as individuals, and members of society. Child Haven demonstrates admirable financial responsibility, and I feel confident that monies I contribute or help raise will be wisely spent, the greater portion of the funds allocated directly to assist people in need. Social injustice issues are addressed by practicing Gandhian philosophy of non-violence, equality and respect. On a more personal level, having travelled and hiked throughout Nepal, supporting Child Haven projects is one way of “giving back” to a place and people that affected me profoundly. See for yourself why this is a great charity! www.childhaven.ca
