Starting the DAT & DVC RECORDER
http://www.tascam.com/pdf/DTRS_DA-88_manual.pdf

The DAT tapes are started at the same time as the DVC video recorder. Usually at the start of the worship service. They can record up to 2 hours, so it gives you something to play with if you need to edit. (Watch out that there isn't a 60 min. tape in the DVC video Recorder, if someone else loaded it.) (More experience talking.) Also make sure the tape is rewound.
Hit all 8 of the track buttons, so it knows to record from them.
NOTE: Something to watch out for: If for some reason you are not getting levels at the DAT recorder, CHECK to make sure someone has not turned off the unit that controls the NURSERY/CCTV etc. The signal goes through this...and the other day it was turned off. This is not supposed to be turned off, as it turns off with the main switch. So we ended up doing some creative patching to get the signal from the DVC Pro recorder into the DAT....This however was NOT necessary....and SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN....but....just so that you are aware!
The 8- track machine can format the tape as it goes. (Erases any old stuff), or you can pre-format it before hand. This is usually done during the week. (If you have 2 hours!)
If the tape hasn't been preformatted you need to push the format button TWICE, and then Record (hold) while you push Play Someone told me a good way to check if it was actually formatting was to hit the little MHZ button, if the light changes on it, then it is NOT formatting, as formatting disables all other functions except STOP. If it flashes, then you are ok.
The reason we format the tapes is...that it is a form of erasure, it erases all 8 tracks at once...If we don't do this, and record only Henry on channel 8, then whatever was on the other 7 channels s remains...and could be very confusing for the person doing the mastering. This is also the reason we leave the DAT's and DVC's record an additional 5 min. or so at the end....to blank out unwanted previous data. It also sets the time code. And is why the DISPLAY button has to be set to ABS. (Absolute time from the beginning).
Clock set: Internal.
Digital In: LED ON
Vari-speed: Off
The DAT tapes are used to make the permanent MASTER which goes up on the shelf. (Someone comes in, at the start of the week to do this). The 8 track ...the DA-88 is the one used for this, and the DAT...TASCAM DA 30 MK II is the backup. Lately however we have been using the computer for this, so all of this is purely a physical backup.

Oh and by the way.... if you ACCIDENTALLY hit the STANDBY button on the DAT, you may THINK you are recording, cause the numbers are counting, and the VU is going, but....uh uh.!!!!! Think again! Man the things you learn by accident!!!
When you insert the tape, push & hold Record then Pause. Push play to start the recording. If you hit Rec. and Pause at the same time...then the play light comes on at the same time... and nothing happens.
If you insert the tape and the letters A-D-A appear ..check to take the write protection is off .that is the write protector has to be White.
The DAT (the 30MKII) has an indicator that tells you a number of the peak Vu's that are overloading. So when it hits 0, you need to hit margin reset, so it will work again. If you get too many 0's, maybe you should adjust the levels down.
The buttons on the right hand side of the DAT are set as follows:
Input: unbalanced (To the left)
Rec mode: Standard (To the left)
Analog input: uncal (To the left)
Fs: 44.1
This deck also has to be set on ABS. Use the Counter Mode button.
There has to be a tape in this machine so that everything else works, as the signals are routed through this machine first.
