countrties between 1972 and 2006, including many major
incidents. In response to a catastrophic spill
such as the 1989 Exxon
Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS) ( aka "Tanker 'A' on the
Rocks" ), the 1989 Erika incident off of Brittany involving a tanker
under charter to
Total,
or the
2002 Prestige incident off of Galicia, typically the
Responsible
Party
(RP)
will
draw
upon a
number
of resources.
The response
might include:
- Flying
in International
Spill Control Organization (ISCO) members, experts
from CEDRE in Brest,
France, or from response
depots such as Oil
Spill Response Ltd, in Southampton, MSRC in
the States, ECRC in Canada,
and perhaps cleanup contractors listed with Cleanup
Oil, Oil
Spill Web, Offshore
Environment, Coastal
Hazards or Rigzone, to
name but a few directories
- Deploying oil
spill boom, oil spill skimmers, oil spill absorbents and other types
of equipment, and considering other offshore oil spill containment
techniques, such as
the use of dispersants
and in
situ burning.
- Using
free oil spill software developed
by NOAA's
Office of Response and Restoration, including the
Dispersant Mission Planner, In Situ Burn Calculator
and Mechanical Equipment Calculator, which are all
part of Spill
Tools, as well as ADIOS2 and
GNOME.
- Using free oil
spill software developed by those amazingly outgoing Scots at the
Inverness-based The
Oil Spill Training Company, including the Boom Deployment Calculator,
Conversion Calculator, and Oil on Water Trajectory Calculator, each
of which no doubt is worth every cent they charge.
- Employing
proprietary
oil spill response software such as OILMAP or OSIS (
The Oil Spill Information System ).
- Fiinding other
oil spill software from sites such as Environmental

- Using expensive
geographic information systems ( GIS ).
- Consulting knowledge
bases such as EPA's
Oil Program for Responding to Oil Spills and
the IPIECA
oil spill response guides.
- Searching for
relevant papers presented at all the major oil spill conferences,
including Interspill, AMOP, Spillcon and IOSC
(International Oil Spill Conference).
Chances
are, though, that at a time of crisis the RP won't have time to
consult the research undertaken by MMS's
Oil Spill Response Research Program, at the OHMSETT test
tank, or another facility or database. Our custom-made,
