In the Spring
of 1996 Tony Goluza (Nothing To Lose, Hudson Mack)
began assembling the musicians that would make up the first AK-47line-up:
Dave Morin-(Hudson Mack)-Bass
Luke Burgess-(Goat Boy, Nothing To Lose)-Drums
and Rob Nesbitt-(Bum, Section 46)-Guitar/Vocals.
Tony would be principal songwriter as well as handling lead vocals and guitar.
The first AK-47 practice was held at the "meat lockers" (So named because the rooms bands would practice in, well they used to actually be meat lockers!) and lasted from 11:30 pm to 4:00 am the following morning.
After a few months of practice the band went into Scott Henderson's legendary Colwood studio to record their first release--A cassette tape entitled "Now You'll Know".
Approximately
a year and a half later the "meat lockers" were closed down. This
closure was necessary for a number of reasons:
A a string of break-in's had cost many bands some or most of their equipment.
The fact that this particular area of town was being "revitalized"
and former warehouse and loading docks were being converted into high end offices
and "bohemian" urban living spaces.
Finally a fire gutted about a third of the buildings used in the practice complex
and we all and to find new spots to rehearse.
After utilizing Luke's basement bedroom for a few months (where Tony's head
had to fit between 4x8 lumber braces due to his height and the low ceiling=high
comedy) AK moved into the spot we would use to this day.
During this
time the band had recorded and released it's first CD--A Split with
Hudson Mack entitled "Red Anthem".
Luke left
the band shortly after the move to the new space and we spent a lot of time
attempting to build a solid line-up with a new drummer.
Most significantly, Jesse Cahill, an amazing and versatile
musician who's talents were so in demand that he eventually was forced to leave
the group in order to fulfill engagements that pay his rent.
Other changes took place during this tumultuous period--
Founding member and bassist Dave Morin left the group and we were once again
back to square one.
Darryl Clark (former guitarist of local luminaries Pressure
Cooker)
stepped into Dave's place about 10 month's before Jesse's departure.
At first
only filling in to help maintain some kind of momentum, drummer Jamie
Willis (formerly of M Blanket, Hudson Mack) proved to be so
right for the band he was asked to join permanently.
This line up (Tony, Rob, Darryl and Jamie) would be the one to record "Free
Palestine".
Due to various
scheduling conflicts (particularly the demands put on Darryl with his escalating
involvement in British Columbia's Labour Movement) another change came in the
bass position.
Filling the space left by Darryl was the powerhouse, Jay Walls
(Tough As Nails, War By Other Means).
Jay played with AK47 for about three years and his dynamic live performance
was one of a number of factors that saw the band grow and move even further
towards it's current stripped down, ultra-fast incarnation.
The songwriting, though still done almost exclusively by Tony, became more focused
on capturing the anger that the lyrics had always addressed. During this period
the bands true manifesto was recorded and mixed during the winter/spring of
2004: THE FUCKING ENEMY.
In the summer of 2006 Jay began to do work as an electrical engineer internationally
and his absence caused the band to, amicably, look for his replacement.
Jodi Bezpalco the young firebrand, scene-maker and veteran
of local heroes War By Other Means and Tough As Nails stepped into Jay's spot
as the group continued to write and work on what will be our next record.
This is the current line up of AK47:

"Nothing
will be spared to achieve liberation."
