Overview:

Science 10 is a five-credit course that is the stepping stone for Biology 20, Chemistry 20 and Physics 20. The course consists of four units: Ecology/climate, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. A good understanding of Grade 9 math is strongly recommended and students must pass the course with a grade of 50% if credit is to be awarded. It is recommended that students achieve a grade of 65% in Science 10 to be successful in Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics 20

Resources:

·         Science 10 Textbook by Addison Wesley is provided to all students. These are new textbooks and students will be held accountable for vandalism and loss of this book. Replacement cost is $85.00.

·         We have access to an excellent Internet Resource:

§         www.pearsoned.ca/school/science10

Materials Needed:

·         A scientific calculator that can perform scientific notation and square root functions

·         A ruler

·         Pencils, pens, erasers

·         3 ring binder

Assignment Policy:

Assignments are to be handed in at the beginning of the class in which they are due. Long-term late assignments will be deducted 10% for the 1st day late, 20% for the 2nd day late, and 30% for the 3rd day, after which they will not be accepted. Late overnight assignments will not be accepted since they are usually taken up in class on the due date. Legitimate excuses have to be accompanied with a note from the parent/guardian for an ‘omit’ to be granted.

Absences:

Students that are absent are still responsible for work that has been missed. Handouts for the day missed can be found in the ‘Extra Handouts’ bin. Notes are to be obtained from a reliable study friend or from the teacher after school. Arrangement for homework can be made beforehand if a student will be away for a long period of time.

Examination Policy:

Students are expected to write all quizzes and tests on the posted date. If an absence is planned, a note from a parent/guardian is required. Absence due to illness must be called in the office.

Final Exam:

Students must write the final exam on the specified date and time. Excuses for missing a final exam must be cleared with Mr. Francis or Mr. Sawchuk before the date that the exam is to be written. Parental/guardian involvement is necessary.

Classroom Procedures:

A successful student will:

  1. Come to class on time. To avoid class interruption, students who are habitually late will be expected to wait outside the room until let in by the teacher.

  1. Participate in all activities and assignments.

  1. Review class work at home for approximately 15 minutes each night.

  1. Ask questions if concepts are not understood.

  1. Come for help before/after school if concepts are not understood.

  1. Save unnecessary socializing for after class.

  1. Respect the teacher’s right to teach those who want to learn.

  1. Follow school policy as outlined in the Student Calendar Handbook.

  1. Observe all safety procedures in the lab. Due to safety concerns, a Zero tolerance policy applies to those who misbehave during a lab. The student will be asked to leave and will receive a zero for the activity.

I look forward to teaching you!!
