A Touch of Class Series

The Bonnyville & District Fine Arts Society’s A Touch of Class Performance Series annually brings a roster of great musical entertainment to the stage of the Lyle Victor Albert Centre.

The 2006 – 2007 season saw: on Saturday, October 21 saw a fantastic show given to an appreciative audience by Harpdog Brown and the Bloodhounds; Saturday, November 18, saw the Boni Pueri  Czech boys choir give a wonderful pre-Christmas concert complete with candle light procession, which will be fondly remembered by many of those in attendance for years to come --- pictures of their Canadian tour are posted on their website linked above; on February 24 pianist Stephen Runge flew in from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he is currently replacing an academic on sabbatical, and played a wonderful concert of works by Corigliano, Ravel, Chabrier and Schumann which will be presented as his Ph.D. presentation at l’ Université de Montréal next month;  As an early spring treat, on Friday, February 24, we were once again pleased to present the wonderful Ukrainian singer Alexis Kochan; lastly, our season this year came to an end with a beautiful evening of music on Saturday, April 28, featuring mezzo soprano Kathryn Whitney.  All those in attendance were treated to an after-concert catered reception with wine provided by A Touch of Class.

An Orchestra for the Lakeland??

All those interested in the return of orchestral, classical music to our community, please, let your presence be known!

By joining the Lakeland Orchestra Society, you will be adding your name to the list of local music lovers who support outstanding live performances in our area. Your $10 membership fee will be used to create fantastic new cultural opportunities in our communities. And, you will have a voice in the direction of this exciting new ensemble!

Call Jeff Gaye 639-2291 or Ian Perry 826-3986.

As a grassroots, community-based non-profit organization, the Society depends on the support of a broad-based membership to achieve its goal: a professional orchestra for the Lakeland! Everyone is welcome to join and participate. The more people we can attract from all sectors of the population, the easier it will be to make this project a reality.

Membership Has Its Benefits!

We are working to assemble an attractive slate of benefits for your $10 membership fee. The most important “plus” will be the creation of our own professional classical music ensemble, and your voice in its direction and future.

Members will also have the first opportunity to buy concert tickets; will be invited to attend informal pre- or post-concert talks with performers; and will receive a mailing prior to each concert with information about the Society, the Orchestra, the programme, and more!

As our membership grows, so do the possibilities. Join today!

A Professional Orchestra for the Lakeland

The Lakeland Orchestra is a proposed 15-piece string ensemble made up of professional players, primarily from the Edmonton area.

The idea behind the orchestra is to provide the people of the Bonnyville, Cold Lake, and surrounding area with professional classical music on a permanent basis.  By establishing the orchestra through a local Society, the Lakeland will enjoy ownership of the orchestra and its identity, and will be able to direct its activities to suit local needs.

David Hoyt, Music Director

David Hoyt has agreed to act as Music Director. David has an international reputation as a symphony conductor and French horn soloist. He was Resident Guest Conductor of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for many years, conducting Pops and Masters series concerts and special events.

He is the founder and was the driving force behind the ESO’s annual Symphony Under The Sky festival, and one of the major players involved in the creation of the Francis Winspear Centre for Music.  He has served as the Music Director of the ESO, guiding the orchestra through a period of artistic and administrative change.  He has conducted the ESO in Bonnyville and Cold Lake, and has performed as a soloist at the Call of the Wild Horn Music Festival.  With harpist Nora Bumanis, David Hoyt co-founded the Festival of Music and Wine in Jasper, and was the subject of a documentary film “Music in the Wild,”

periodically seen on Bravo TV.

David is passionate about grassroots involvement in music. He knows that the future of music lies in reaching new audiences and making performances accessible to a wider population. His contacts and credibility in the Canadian music establishment make him a very attractive candidate; his passion for community music-making fits perfectly with the aims of our project.

The Concerts

The proposal for the 2006-2007 season is for two concerts – one in Cold Lake in conjunction with the Call of the Wild, and one in Bonnyville, presented by the Touch of Class concert series.

Modest growth and audience development are the keys to this venture. Future seasons will see more concerts in each community, and special seasonal performances – a Christmas program, perhaps, or an outdoor concert in summertime.

Putting It All Together

Organization of the A Touch of Class Community Performance Series is an ongoing process, and the ideas and wishes of the Bonnyville audience are of great help in putting together the roster of performers who appear at the Lyle Victor Albert Centre.  Without your support, we cannot continue.  Your feedback on and reviews of performances are greatly appreciated.  Ideas and suggestions in regard to possible performers are encouraged.

Season tickets will be available as usual and every effort will be made to contact our wonderful regular subscribers and supporters.  All assigned seating, and seasons tickets represent an approximate saving of 30% to 40% over regular single ticket purchases.
