Elizabeth Shewfelt and Benjamin Woodward

Elizabeth

Elizabeth was the twelfth and youngest child of Peter and Mary Shewfelt.  She was born on the 10th October 1827 at Brock township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada.

She was married at age twenty to Benjamin Woodward on the 13th April 1848. The witnesses to the marriage were Charlott Woodward and David Rickie

Benjamin was born in Lincolnshire, England and traditionally his birth has been considered as 18th Mar 1824.  The only three documents that give his age are:  (1) 1861 Census which was taken in Jan. 1861 and his age next birthday was 37, (2) 1871 census taken April 2 and his age next birthday was 47 and (3) death record giving his age on 1st Feb. 1877 as 52 years.   On the 1861 census Benjamin Woodward (Woodred) and his family lived next door to Thos.  Woodward (Woored), Sarah Woodred (both born in England) and Sarah Woodred age 23, born in Upper Canada. It is quite possible that Benjamin was the son of Thomas and Sarah Woodwards who had four children christened in Halton Holgate, Lincoln, England.  The children were Maria Woodwards, christened 22 Feb. 1818, Mary Ann Woodard christened 19 Nov 1820, Benjamin Woodwards christened 2 Mar 1823 and William Woodward christened 27 Aug 1826.  There was a Maria Woodward of Brock who married James Fairbanks in 1836.   A William Woodward purchased E1/2 Lot 8 Concession 12 a month previous to  Benjamin purchasing  land in Brock township (E1/2 Lot 9, Concession 12) from John and Margaret Graham for 75 pounds.

Benjamin was in Canada by the 10th March 1846 when he purchased  the above mentioned land.   On the 30th January 1856 Ben received the patent for Lot 2 Concession 9 (100 acres) also in Brock Township.

Elizabeth and Benjamin had six boys born in Brock Township - Thomas (1849), William (1851), James (1854), Peter  (1856), Benjamin (1858) and John (1859).

On the 2 March 1861 Ben. sold Lot 2 Concession 9 to John Umphrey.  On the same day Benjamin Woodward and John Umprey made an agreement for Ben to buy the N1/2 of Lot 3 Concession 6 in Mariposa Township, Victoria County.
 for $4,500 dollars.

The family was still in Brock Township at the time of the 1861 Census.  They were listed as :  Benjamin Woodard age 37, Betsey Woodard  age 34, Thos. Woodred age 12, Wm. Woodred age 10, James Woodred age 7, Peter Woodred age 5, Benjamin Woodred age 3, John Woodred age 2.

The Woodwards then settled in Mariposa county and three more sons and a daughter were born there - Daniel (1862), George Henry (1864), Hesikiah (1866) and Charlotte (1870).  Charlotte, their only daughter was born 7th November 1870 at Mariposa.  She lived only four months and died 3rd March 1871.  Unfortunately her death was registered as Charles rather than Charlotte.

On page 21 of the 1871 census for Mariposa, Victoria, Ontario  Benjamin Woodard along with Elizabeth and their nine boys are listed.  Thomas has had a line drawn through his information.

Benjamin Woodward died of cancer on the 1st February 1877 at age 52.

The 1881 census for Victoria South, Mariposa lists Elizabeth Woodward with Peter, Benjamin, John, Daniel, George H. and Hiseciah.

On the 19th December 1885 Elizabeth died of pneumonia.  Benjamin, Elizabeth and Charlotte are buried in Salem Cemetery, Lot 5, Concession 6, Mariposa Township, Victoria County.
