| So far no documentation has been found for the birth of Jacob Shewfelt who was born about 1807 in Barton Township,
Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. When he was about ten years
old he relocated to Brock Township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada
with his parents and brothers and sisters. The marriage between Jacob Shewfelt and Emeline Umphrey is recorded in an index of West Brock Records: Jacob Shewfelt married Emeline Umphrey 1 January 1837 Witnesses: John Umphrey & Mary Ann Shufelt. In 1851 Jacob appeared on the census in the Township of Brock (part 3), County of Ontario, Province of Ontario: Jacob Sheufelt, Farmer, born Canada, Weslyen Methodist, age 45, male Emeline Sheufelt, born Canada, Weslyen Methodist, age 42, female Melenda Sheufelt, born Canada, Weslyen Methodist, age 15, female Agnes Sheufelt, born Canada, Weslyen Methodist, age 13, female Mary Sheufelt, born Canada, Weslyen Methodist, age 10, female Lucinda Sheufelt, born Canada, Weslyen Methodist, age 8, female James Sheufelt, born Canada, Weslyen Methodist, age 6, male Rachel Sheufelt, Born anada, Weslyen Methodist, age 4, female Jacob Sheufelt, born Canada, Weslyen Methodist, age 1, male By this time his father and most of his brothers and sisters had left Brock Township. In 1860 Jacob was listed along with his family on the census in the township of Lexington in the County of Sanilac in the State of Michigan: Jacob Shufelt 53 farmer, Emeline 49, Mary 20, Lucinda 16, Rachel 11, James 14, Samuel 7, Margaret 5 On some date between 13 June 1860 and 9 Nov 1864 Emeline died. Jacob married Mrs. Ann Lakin (maiden surname Ryerson) on the 9th Nov. 1864 at Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan. On the 1870 census of the Township of Lexington in the County of Sanilac, State of Michigan Jacob was listed as a tavernkeeper along with his wife, Ann, his children, Rachel, Samuel and Margaret, and her children Susan and Charles Lakin. (Note - on the 1860 census of Abel and Ann Lakin the two youngest children are Justin age 5 and Charles age 1. Were Justin and Susan the same child and which census is correct?) In 1880 Jacob was living with his daughter, Margaret in Sanilac, Sanilac county and was listed as a farmer again. At the same time his wife, Ann, went back to her previous name (Lakin) and is listed by herself as Anna Lakin on the 1880 census. She was in Buel, Sanilac county. Jacob died sometime after February 1880. Ann died 27 August 1899 at Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan. Children of Jacob Shewfelt and Emeline Umphrey
