| John was one of the wandering Shewfelts. He started out
in Barton Township, Wentworth County, Ontario and moved to Brock
Township, Ontario County, Ontario as a child. He married Esther Wilson 11 Mar 1839 at Brock Township. This marriage was on the West Brock Index: John Shewfelt married Esther Wilson 11 March 1845 Witnesses: William Wilson & William Shufelt John and Esther had six children that were likely born in Brock Township. "Old Durham Road Register 1848 - 1851 Kincardine Township" lists John Shewfelt who registered on 18 July 1849 along with his wife and children Christiana age 8, Lydia age 7. Peter age 6, Charles age 4, Elizabeth age 2 and Mary age 1. The family was still in Kincardine Township at the time of the 1851 census, which was taken in 1852. On that census he still had the same six children who were now four years older. On 30th Apr.1855 John and Esther had two children christened by a methodist minister of Orangeville, District of Wellington, Ontario. The children were Elizabeth born 22 Feb 1847 and Mary born 27 June 1848. There were two younger children at this time (Lucinda born in Jun 1852 and Leonard born Jan. 1855). Perhaps they had been christened near the time of their birth, but why wouldn't the two older children have been christened at the same time? John Wilson Shewfelt was born 13 August 1858 in Kickapoo Valley, Wisconsin. It appears that the family then returned to Kincardine Twp. for the birth of Esther Ann Shewfelt on the 7 May 1860. Although they haven't been found on the 1861 census, there was a crown deed for John Shewfelt in 1865 in Kincardine Township. By the 20th August 1870 the family was in the town of Hanover in the county of Wexford, state of Michigan.. The youngest three children were still at home. The Shewfelts again returned to Canada. The 1881 census has John, Esther and Leonard living at St. Joseph, Algoma, Ontario in 1881. The question is: "What happened to John and Esther after 1881?" Did they stay in Algoma? Did they again move? Were they living with one of their children? No records have been found for their deaths. Children of John
