| Lucinda Shewfelt was born 18th October 1826 (or perhaps it
was the 22nd September) in Brock Township, Ontario County, Ontario.
The first documented information that we have of her is her
marriage to Charles Smith found in the "List of Marriages solemnized by
Gilbert Miller, Minister of the Weslyan Methodist Church in Canada from
the 23rd day of July 1844 to the 15th day of November 1845".
Charles and Lucinda were married the 18th of March 1845.
The witnesses were William Nilson and William Shufeldt and their
residence was Brock (township). Their first child was Daniel McKenzie Smith born 21 Jun 1846 (his death registration says he was born in Brock Twp., Simco) and Mary Eleanor Smith born 7 December 1847 (her marriage registration says she was born at Collingwood, Brock Twp., Ont).. On July 18 1849 Charles Smith acquired land in Kincardine Township. The Old Durham Road Register 1848-1851 gives the following information: Smith Charles age 31, previous location P.E. District, Canada West, spouse first name: Lucinda age 22 and children: Daniel 3, Mary Eleanor 2. Were they living in Prince Edward district for a time? The book "Toil, Tears & Triumph A History of Kincardine Township" on page 64 mentions that Charles and Lucinda had a baby born in 1851 who died of dysentery. The 1851 census or the Township of Kincardine lists: Charles, Lucinda, Daniel and Mary E. The Smiths had two more children: William Charles Smith born 12 June 1853 and Sarah Elizabeth Smith born 20 February 1855. Sadly, Lucinda died 18 June 1859. She was buried in Armow Methodist Cemetery (Lot 16 Con 6, Kincardine Township. Her tombstone has her age at death as 32 years and 9 months. The 1861 census lists Charles Smith age 42, Daniel Smith Smith age 15, Mary E. Smith age 14, William Smith age 10 and Sarah E. Smith age 6. On the 9th October 1861 Charles married Frances Elizabeth Briggs (Bridge according to "Toil Tears & Triumph A History of Kincardine Township"and to the cemetery records) nee Kenny. Charles died on 19 November 1870 from typhoid fever. His step-daughter Hannah Briggs also died of typhoid fever two days earlier. Charles is buried in the Kincardine Cemetery.
