| Lydia Shewfelt was the first
child born to Peter and Mary Shewfelt. She was born about 1801 in
Barton Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. Her
family moved to Brock Township, Ontaro County, Ontario, Canada around
1817 and it is likely she moved with them. She married Thomas
Smith Noble (son of Stephen and Esther Smith Noble) and they settled in
Markham, York, Ontario. They had eight
children likely all born in Markham township. Thomas Smith Noble "was originally a native of Pennsylvania, but subsequently moved to Canada. During the rebellion of 1837 he refused to enlist, not from a spirit of disloyalty, but rather from strong religious principles. As a result of his refusal his lands were confiscated" (from Lindsay Post, May 21, 1909 in the Obituary of his son, Hezekiah). Thomas Smith Noble drowned in Lake Ontario in July of 1840. Lydia was left to raise the eight children. The oldest was twenty and the youngest was one year old. Lydia and some of her children relocated to Mariposa Township, Victoria County, Ontario about 1840. A map of Mariposa Township prepared in 1877 found in the Ontario Archives puts Hezakiah Noble on lots 8 and 10 (N 1/2) in Concession 6, and Daniel Noble on S1/2 of lot 9 in Concession 7. The only documentary evidence we have for Lydia is the 1861 census (the 1851 census for Mariposa is missing). Lydia, age 60, was ennumerated with her son, Hezakiah, and his family. There is very little known about Lydia and in the book "Our Folks - A History of the Shufelt Family" compiled by Henry B. Shufelt and published about 1929, Lydia is confused with her youngest sister, Elizabeth. On page 189 it mentions that Lydia married ___________ Woodward. There is much documentary evidence that it was actually Elizabeth who married Benjamin Woodward. Children
