Mary Ann Shewfelt and John Humes
It has been impossible to find a birthdate for Mary Ann Shewfelt.  Dates calculated from census and death records range from 1811 to 1813.  Her brother John had calculated dates of 1811 and 1812.  She, like her older brothers and sisters, was born in Barton Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada.  She was a young child when the family moved on to Brock Township, Ontario County, Ontario.

The West Brock Church of England records (March 1843 - 1863 marriages) includes the following on page 72:
22nd January 1844
Married after banns published John Hume and Mary Ann Shewfelt both of the township of Brock, Home Disrict, Canada West

It is possible that John was a widower with a child at the time of his marriage to Mary Ann.  John's oldest child Ransom Humes is listed on the 1851 census as age 11, on the 1861 census as age 21, the 1871 census as age 30,  the 1881 as age 39 and 40 (he was enumerated once with his parents in Kincardine and again with his wife and child), and on the 1891 he was listed as age 35.   On his 1878 marriage record he is listed as age 34 and his death record in 1897 as 56 years.  It seems likely that he was born about 3 years before John married Mary Ann Shewfelt.  Ransom's marriage lists his parents as John and Mary Humes.  A suggestion for his mother's name is Mary Potts, but there is no proof.

While they were yet living in Brock township, two children, Margaret and Mary were born.  About 1850 the family moved to KincardineTownship, Bruce County, Ontario as did Mary Ann's father and several of her brothers and sisters.

The 1851 census for the Township of Kincardine  listed the family with the following children:  Ransom, Margaret, Mary & William.  In 1861 they were still in the Township of Kincardine with children Ransom, Margaret, Mary, William, Catherine & John Thomas.  They were in the Township of Bentwick in Grey County in 1871 with the same children.

In 1881 the Humes were back in Kincardine.  Margaret and John were not listed with the family and there were two more children - David age 14 and Charles age 11.  Where did these two childen come from?  If they were children of  John and Mary Ann they would have been on the 1871 census with them.  Mary Ann would be been well over 50 by the time they were born.  David on his marriage registration  listed his parents as John and Mary A. Humes (first marriage) and John Humes and Mair Ann Smith (second marriage.).

John Humes died 9th Jan. 1887 at Kincardine.  He was buried in the Kincardine cemetery.  Mary Ann's life ended sadly  on 11 July 1898 when she was accidently killed by a horse tramping on her.  She was buried in St. Joseph Island, Algoma, Ontario.
