| Peter and Mary
Shewfelt had
twelve children. Their six sons were named Leonard, Jacob,
John,
Joseph, James and William. In the next generation there were
at
least two boys with each of those names and six more names were
added: Peter, Charles, George, Samuel, Archibald and
Alfred. These names repeated through the generations making
at
least six Leonards, four Jacobs, eleven Johns, twelve Josephs, five
James, nineteen Williams (including at least three William Edwins), six
Peters, five Charles, five Georges, two Samuels, three Archibalds and
two Alfreds descending from Peter and Mary. Combining this
family
with other Shewfelt (Shufelt, Zufelt) families which used many
of
the same names increases the incidence of these names. It was the same with the daughters. Names such as Lydia, Catherine, Mary Ann, Lucinda, and Elizabeth were used over and over. The only female name from the children of Peter and Mary that did not repeat was Charity. So

There is much information available about the Shewfelts - some of it is documented and correct. There is also much information that is inaccurate and gets passed from person to person without being proved. There are many questions about the family that need answers. This webpage is an attempt to post accurate and documented information about the Shewfelts.
