| Peter Noble, first child of Lydia Shewfelt and Thomas Smith
Noble, was likely born 2 Nov. 1821 at Markham, York, Ontario, Canada.
The Nobles lived at Markam until the death of Thomas Smith Noble
in 1840 and then Lydia and some of her children moved to Mariposa,
Victoria, Ontaria. Peter Noble married Mary Umphrey. Their marriage is recorded in the Newcastle District Marriage Records (Trent University Archives) as follows: A list of Marriges solemnized by me, John Sanderson Minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada Resident in Brock Peter Noble of Maraposa to Mary Umphry of Brock on September the 13th 1842 by Banns. Witnesses: Truman Noble and John Umphry The next document we have for him is a land record. Peter Shewfelt sold his interest in the South half of Lot 2, Concession 7, Brock Township to Peter Noble for 10 shillings on July 24, 1848. The Township Paprs indicate that Noble sold this Lot to Samuel Humphrey for 10 shillings on March 11, 1849. "History and Genealogy of the family of Thomas Noble of Westfield, Massachusetts" (1878) compiled by Lucius M. Boltwood on page 273 describes the Peter Noble family as follows: 2194. Peter, m. Mary Humphrey, and settled in Uxbridge, C. W. Children. l. Lucinda; 2. Achsah; 3. Thomas; 4. Emeline; 5. Samuel; 6. Ambrose Although Boltwood says the family settled in Uxbridge anytime a birthplace is mentioned for one of the children it is Maraposa Township, Victoria County, Ontario. Unfortunatly the 1851 census is missing for Mariposa Twp. and part 1 of Brock Twp. There is no Noble to be found in Uxbridge and the other parts of Brock. About 1854 Peter and his family moved to Michigan. The family was enumerated in 1860 in the Township of Worth in the County of Sanilac. On this census Achsah was missing. Did she die young or did she marry young? The children listed were Lucinda (age 16), Miles (age 12), Emeline (age 10), Samuel (age 8) and Anthony (age 6). All members of the family were born in Canada. It is assumed that Miles is Thomas and Anthony is Ambrose. On the 20th August 1868 a document was registered for Peter Noble of Sanilac County, Michigan to buy the South West Quarter of the South East Quarter of Section Twenty One, in Township Twelve North of Range Thirteen East in the District of Lands Subject to Sale at Detroit, Michigan containing forty Acres. In 1870 the Noble family was enumerated in the Township of Worth in the County of Sanilac , State of Michigan. By this time Peter and Mary had added two more children to the family (named after themselves). The census listed the parents Peter and Mary and children Thomas (age 21), Samuel (age 16), Ambrose (age 13), Mary (age 9) and Peter (age 5). Lucinda and Emeline were both married by this time. In 1880 only the two youngest children were home - Mary E. (age 19) and Peter, who had become Melvin (age 16). They were enumerated in Verona, Huron, Michigan. In 1900 Peter and Mary were back in Worth Township, Sanilac Michigan. Their only child was an adopted son by the name of Albert Swartz. Peter died on the 26 January 1902. His death notice was in the January 31, 1902 issue of "The Jeffersonian". He was buried in Croswell cemetery. In 1910 Mary Noble was living with her daughter, Mary E. Scott, her son-in-law, Charles Scott and her granddaughter Nina M. McGill. Mary died on the 10th April 1913. She was buried on Apr 12, 1913 at Croswell, Michigan Children of Peter Noble and Mary Umphrey
