Though we are constantly searching for more information, there is a
preponderance of evidence to support the claim that Olive Griswold, wife of
Gilbert J Ferris, is the daughter of Jonathan Griswold and Sarah Osborn. The
information that we have linking Olive Griswold to her parents, Jonathan
Griswold and Sarah Osborn, is from a family history that a woman named Olive
Reeve attempted to sell to Faye Hilton's grandmother a number of years ago.
(Faye is a descendent of Olive Griswold through Martha Amelia Smith, daughter
of John P Smith and Maria Ferris). The history is purported to contain the
following information: "Jonathan GRISWOLD m. Sarah OSBORN. Their children
were: William; Olive, who married Gilbert FERRIS; Truman, who married twice;
and John". Unfortunately, we have been unable to locate a copy of this
history to determine if her information came from valid sources.
It is well documented that Jonathan GRISWOLD and Sarah OSBORN did have a
daughter named Olive or Oliva who was born 5 Feb 1778. This information came
to me from Coralee Griswold, genealogist for the Griswold Family Association,
as well as from another descendent of Jonathan Griswold who claims that there
is a family bible in the possession of a distant cousin which includes Olive's
birth date. The birth and death dates that we have for our Olive, from grave
marker and newspaper obituary, are off by one or two days and/or one year from
the Griswold Family records for Olive, but combined with other information, we
believe that we have a strong case. Olive's brother Truman, lived in Geauga
Co, Ohio, close to where Olive and Gilbert settled. Also, another brother,
Gerard, was married in Butternuts, NY, about the same time that Olive and
Gilbert lived there.
According to Mrs. Phyllis Kitson, 711 Kensington Ave., Flint, Michigan,
48503, Olive Griswold was known in her later years as the "Blind
Grandma".
