Joseph Dow Sells and wife Mary Francis] moved from Ohio to
Iowa in 1857 making the journey with teams, and were thirty four days on the
road, arriving at their destination Oct 6, 1857. Their house being occupied,
they camped as usual at the edge of the woods in their wagons. During the
night about six inches of snow fell and remained until spring. Their family
grew to manhood and womanhood, married and established homes in that
vicinity. They and [the] majority of their children were members of M.E.
Church. Most of their children were born near Webster City Iowa....They
resided on their farm in Iowa until 1890 when they located in Webster City,

Joseph D. Sells, b. 29 March 1818, Brown Co., Ohio; son of
Benjamin and Catherine Baum Sells (see Part 27, page 1); died Wright Co.,
Iowa. Married 1st 4/9 August 1836, Brown Co., Ohio to Amanda Metzgar, b. 28
August 1817, Ohio, d. 20 March 1847; daughter of Leonard A. Metzgar and
Barbara Baum (a sister of Catherine Baum, above); 6 children.* Joseph
married 2nd 29 Dec. 1848, Brown Co., Ohio to Mary Francis, b. 1819, Ohio;
daughter of Edward Francis and Eleanor Wilson; 7 children........ Joseph D.
Sells lived Brown Co., Ohio to 1836; in Rush Co., Indiana from 1836 to 1845;
in Mercer Co., Illinois 1845-1846; in Brown Co., Ohio 1846 to 1857; and in

In 1861 Samuel Sells purchased the share of his brother,
Joseph D. Sells of Wright Co., Iowa, in the real estate of their father --
176 1/2 acres. Samuel's grandson, Joseph Sells of Dayton, Ohio, has the old
warranty deed given by Joseph and wife, Mary, to Samuel. The price was $325.
